hey, everybodums...
im seriously considering moving to japan. i love everything about the place- at least what i know.. in my opinion, the most technically advanced nation on earth, where its perfectly acceptable to love toys and comics, seems like the place i need to be. Now, i love the US, but our govmt is(no political discussion of any kind) and i wanna get out. i watch alot of japanese tv and i love every bit of it. machine girl and robo-geisha are 2 of my favorite movies...me and my daughter rock out to Shonen knife and kyary pamyu pamyu. not huge on the whole ninja/samurai bit, but other than that- japan has gotta be Tits! i'm wondering if any tankers out there had anything to say or insight on japan.

I would feel way too out of place to ever live in Japan. I wouldn't mind going there on a vacation, because a lot of it does look great. Everything I know about Japan is based on movies though. The most informative stuff that I know about it I learned from Karl Pilkington on "An Idiot Abroad". His views on foreign countries are embarassingly much like my own.

Yep, Japan does indeed kick ass. I've been to Hamamatsu, Japan five times - and I LOVE it. Japan is great. The country is beautiful, I love the culture (and there is SO much history), the people are respectful and work hard. America could learn a lot from Japan.
Now granted, I get treated well over there. We get fairly nice hotel rooms and eat like friggin' Kings. I'm imagining daily life would be much more mundane. Have you ever been there, davy? I would definitely plan a stay over there to check it out and see what you think. If I had any advice? I would visit first, like I said, and get used to things being much smaller. It's not giant vehicles, houses, roads etc. like it is here. Most cars are sub-compact, and a lot of two-lane roads are smaller than one lane roads here! Same goes for people's houses. Living quarters are much smaller. Seriously, imagine everything scaled down in size. Refrigerators and washers are only two feet wide! Last edited by Cobra Terrorist; 09-16-2013 at 07:08 PM.. |

I lived there for 7 years and love it. But it certainly isn't true that "its perfectly acceptable to love toys and comics"! At least, no more so than in the US. If you go to Japan and tell people that you collect action figures and love Haruhi Suzumiya, they will immediately label you as one of those weird foreign otaku and slowly back away...

Well for one thing the cost of living is extremely high in the cities. Getting citizenship is very hard and takes years. unless you are bilingual I would imagine that job prospects are not promising. You could teach English, but the Japanese market for that is not what it was in the 80s and early 90s. I think all of the big English school only offer apartment, but only for single occupancy.
As for being the most technologically advanced, it depends on which aspect. Korea has faster internet and better cell phones.

Dude.... Japan.... hates...nerds.
Otaku culture is only celebrated by a tiny percentage of the country. and is generally looked down upon by the majority. The people, though polite to your face, will freaking slam you just for being an American. In fact...there are places that dont allow foreigners in their establishment. If you decide to move there, I suggest you find yourself a host who can educate you on the culture. also... they sell hot coffee in a metal can..
