hey, everybodums...
im seriously considering moving to japan. i love everything about the place- at least what i know.. in my opinion, the most technically advanced nation on earth, where its perfectly acceptable to love toys and comics, seems like the place i need to be. i'm wondering if any tankers out there had anything to say or insight on japan. >>>>>>You wish to move to Japan? You wouldn't if you truly knew what you were setting yourself up for. By all means, you might get lucky and never encounter these things. Quite a few Japanese I knew weren't like this. But the Japan I knew 7 years ago was very much like this. I wouldn't suggest moving to Japan. Unless you can pass for a natural born Japanese and know the customs very thoroughly. It's not like most European societies where differences are accepted and encouraged, in Japan if you're different, you get ignored or treated poorly. If you don't fit in or look Japenese, they'll intentionally discriminate against you when you look for jobs or when you live there. They're highly xenophobic and paranoid against outsiders and nonconformists, but they're especially prejudiced against foreigners. Even Japanese from South America get discriminated against!!! And they look the same, it's crazy!! Why do you think they're so polite all the time? No joke, nonconformists get bullied often and discriminated against They even have a derogatory word called gaijin that's similar in connotation to nigger(i don't mean to offend) but directed at foreigners. Yeah, it's that bad. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> In addition, there's all sorts of nasty things about Japan you don't hear about when they say it's a really peaceful nation and prosperous and has a vibrant culture. Japan's Economy is a wreck. It still is suffering from a decline in productivity due to Stiff competition for natural resources from China, South Korea and Indonesia. Couple this with the highly self destructive tendency of the average Japanese to save all their wages in bank accounts instead of investing it or spending it and there you go, the economy is a wreck. Japan is one of the costliest countries to live in compared to the entire world, even more than the United States. Everything costs MUCH more in Japan than in the United States, EVERYTHING because it's an island nation that has to import everything and has a very high population density. It's also in the top ten unhappiest countries to live in. The competition for jobs is incredible. There is very real sexism in Japan. Girls are expected to shut up and do as they are told, while guys are expected to give all their financial assets and money to their wives and women. Which means marriages almost never happen and cheating amongst spouses is rather common, especially given that they don't have any religious laws against cheating and men and women are EXPECTED to sleep around. No joke. . . . . that is because in Japanese society, fidelity and love are separate. You can love someone, but expecting them to be sleeping only with you in japan is insane. Lastly, the people there are trained VERY differently from people you're likely familiar with in the UNITED STATES. Since conformity is rewarded, and nonconformity is not, watching your words and etiquette and (pride/face) is VERY Important. Doing the wrong thing or not giving respect in their culture is similar to Giving someone the finger!!! And instead of arguments and face to face confrontations, Japanese are very good at the hidden backstabbing that happens in workplaces. You know, the type where someone intentionally screws you over when you're not looking? Well they do it all the time over there, to avoid letting you know how they truly feel while hurting you. Japan is a very fun place to watch and read about and visit. But it's a terrible place to live in. I've seen it, why do you think I'm in the U.S. ? I write this praying you'll understand that you really shouldn't go. It's a damn hell down there. I'm being serious, do yourself a favor and don't go. I'm from Ohio. But I live in Japan. I've been here about...oh...8 or 9 years, on and off. Been here 5 years straight this time. I'm in Saitama, which is next to Tokyo. I also used to live in Chiba. I've never lived more than an hour train ride from Tokyo, and I wouldn't want to! I friggin' LOVE that city!!
Personally, I like living here. There is some truth to a lot of what was said. Some people have had negative experiences here. Others, like myself, have had better ones, or we just cope with being different better. Honestly, it's not a utopia. It has its problems. But it has its good points too. Like anywhere else. It works really well for ME, but that's just me. Some people get here and hate and some people get here and stay their whole lives. I LIKE being an outsider. I wouldn't want to live here as a Japanese person. It's only fun for me BECAUSE I don't fit in. I can get away with stuff that Japanese people can't. As me anything, I'll tell you all about it. |

When you live in Japan long enough, you learn to ignore the bitter, negative foreigners who just can't adjust. They often complain about the discrimination, the poor working conditions, etc., but they almost always can't be bothered to learn Japanese, they hang out exclusively with other foreigners or westernized Japanese, they have no career prospects beyond English teacher, and they hate the food and every other aspect of Japanese culture. Yet for some reason, they stay and make it their mission to let everybody on the internet know how horrible Japan is (I'm pretty sure they'd complain no matter where they lived).
Thankfully, most of the foreigners in Japan who take the time to learn the language and immerse themselves in the culture love being there. It's the safest country in the world, so you never have to worry about what part of town you're in or anything like that. If you're actually somewhat fluent in Japanese, it's not that difficult to be accepted into a group, assuming you have some sort of common interests. And once you stop trying to apply your cultural values to Japan, you can learn to appreciate its uniqueness. |

In the past 2 years I have run across the USA and the UK.
In planning my next journey on foot one fond dream is Japan. I know there have been others who have done it and it is 2000 miles from end to end. I would like to know if there are budget hotels or Bed and Breakfast type places like in the UK? If so what are average rates converted to dollars? I will ideally have a tent in my backpack but would prefer to not use it often. What is the Internet situation? I document and use the net to update family and friends. Are credit cards accepted in most places I would need (i.e to sleep and eat)? Not really something I plan on doing for at least a year and a half but who knows what situation will happen maybe I will go sooner.

Nice try Sanitation Viper. But offensive statements like that really should be left in the toilet, like your name. Last edited by Snakeeyesisposh; 10-15-2013 at 12:22 AM.. Reason: Previous post makes no sense |

Not really something I plan on doing for at least a year and a half but who knows what situation will happen maybe I will go sooner. Credit cards still aren't accepted at smaller stores, so you would have to carry cash. You can withdraw cash from the ATMs at 7-11 or the post office, but you'll pay fees to do so. Walking (or running) across Japan means walking on a lot of paved roads with cars driving by, or so I've heard. A lot of Japanese people do the 88 temple pilgrimage in Shikoku: 88 Temple Pilgrimage travel guide - Wikitravel This guy has done some walking trips around Japan: The walking fool: The Tokaido diary |
