This will be my first Comic Con and I am going to buy tickets this week. I saw that they have a volunteer program where you work at least 3 hours a day and get free admission so I figured I might as well apply. Has anyone ever done the volunteer work or know someone that has and what does it entail? Either way I'll get tickets but hey, if I you can work just a few hours out of the day to get in for free then that is not too bad. I'll just sling my tickets if I get accepted. My homie lives down there so I don't have to worry about getting a crib to stay at so I figured this could be a nice way to cheap out on it. Hell, I'm going to long board to it each day. Any info would be greatly appreciated. By the way, the 4 day passes are sold out and so is Saturday. I plan on staying the week if possible.

IT SUCKS!
Actually its not that bad, but you do do a lot of work. If you can get tickets, just buy them so you can enjoy the whole trip. There is SO much to do there you will be missing SOMETHING you want to see (I guarantee you) while you are doing the volunteer work.

Every-damn-day is worth it.
Like you, my friend's parents have a place downtown SD so getting to and from the convention center is no big deal (if you drive, parking is a biatch). There is SO much going on every day (From Preview night Wednesday to Sunday) you don't want to miss anything. The panels are a crapshoot, the timing and locations usually are diametrically opposed to something else you want to do. i.e. last year the Supernatural (tv show, yes Im lame) panel was held at like 11am-12pm, with signings by the actors from Supernatural @ 12pm.. ACROSS THE DAMN convention center. By the time I ran down there they had closed the line off and you couldn't get a signature. So you had to either see the panel, or get in line for a signature. That sucked. But the panels are spread out over all the days, GENERALLY, the big ones are on Friday and Saturday. Sunday is "kids day" so there is more kid programming going on then. But yeah.. there are so many booths to see you won't see everything even if you go 5 days. It is freaking awesome. This will be my.. 3rd? Comic-Con and I can't wait!

Thanks for the info NSA! How do the exclusive figures work? One per registrant? You are getting me hyped about this. I am getting the remaining days tomorrow!

Every damn vendor does it differently, which is good and bad.
Some (like Hasbro last year) made you wait in a line at location A to get a ticket for the booth at location B. You waited at A, got a ticket that had a certain time-frame for location B, you went to the booth at location B at your time frame, got in line and when you made it to the counter you got the 'opportunity' to purchase what you wanted. Some things are 'limited' in quanity, i.e. you could only buy 1 Blue SDCC Cobra Commander, but you could also buy 4 Black SDCC Cobra Commanders. They also had the Joe protective cases for $10 each and other odds and ends. Most things have some limit (like 5) but not all. Other booths just do a first come first serve till they are gone, this usually results in people coming to preview night (Wednesday, only invited if you bought a 4 day pass) and buying up any-and-all things they think might turn a buck on eBay. Generally, you can only get these if you make a MAD dash to that booth first thing in the morning. Others still release things at different times during the show to allow "everyone" the opportunity to buy the items. However this just means you will be spending one (or more) of your days sitting in line waiting to get the chance to buy an exclusive figure. Others still STILL do a stupid lottery system where you have to complete some sort of test or scavenger hunt to get a "ticket" which may, or may not allow you to buy the item at a later date. They did this for Lego Batman last year and a few other places. This is fun sometimes, but you end up running all over town looking for buttons or pins or what have you, and one piece will invariably be in short supply. More on this next post..

Others STILL STILL STILL do things where they scan your badge (Hasbro did this too) and then you get your item, so you can't keep going back. (Bring friends who don't like Joes, use them to buy you more! That's how I got extra Blue SDCC CCs ;)).
Generally, to stay sane, pick and choose your battles. If you really want to get all the SDCC exclusives, do a battle plan ahead of time and don't plan on having much fun. I know I want the Joe one, the Transformers maybe, and maybe a few others (like Stargate!), but I am not a scalper and don't feel like waiting my time at the funnest show on earth running around buying crap. You will miss out on something I promise, but everyone does, and thats what eBay is for I guess! Last year I dressed up 3 days out of the 4, so I managed to have fun with my friends even while I was sitting in line. Final thoughts, bring lots of water and money, $hit is expensive there!!!

This is my 2nd time going. I recommend anyone who is going for the 1st time is to wake up early! The lines are long for everything! Especially to buy from any of the major toy vendors! (hasbro, Mattel, etc..) For Hasbro's line last year, you had to get a ticket from upstairs near the registration booths just so you could line up! And forget about getting the really sought after toy on saturday, they are usually sold out by thurs or fri(sometimes even on preview night!).
But just go and have fun, There is a lot to take in from the show. I promise you won't be able to do everything in 1 day. It just worth going at least once in life! |
