So true... The RULE OF THUMB to remember here is this... The price of a thing is ONLY what the next person will pay for it. When beanie babies were hot people eagerly paid big bucks for them, but when the craze passed nobody really wanted them anymore, and the price plummeted. It happens with everything... Todays MUST HAVE item is tomorrows dollar store merchandise.

Well I watched this video and I feel bad for the family. At least the Father had good intentions And he kept saying he originally did it because his kids were into them in the beginning.
I see the same thing happen with Fathers and their sons in sports. I had a good friend that was into Soccer. His Dad took him to every tournament, Select Soccer, traveling teams etc. When he hit high school he Despised soccer and Hated it with a passion. Some Fathers go to far with pushing their kids into sports. Just like toys, toys are meant for kids to play with and have fun. Same with sports, its a Kids game meant to have fun, not trying to make your son into the next Derek Jeter. |

Back on topic with Beanie Babies. I remember I was at some old run down flea market several years ago and saw this table FULL of Hot Wheels. I swear that had to be 5,000 + in this booth. The dealer had about six or eight 6 ft long tables. I counted one stack of HW and there were about 20 piled up in one stack alone. Then there were about 50+ stacks on each table.
Then under each table there were cases full of HW. I asked the guy about his HW cars. He said he had about 2-3 storage lockers full wall to wall floor to ceiling with HW. Those are never going to sell. Those HW cars at his booth will be around for another 50+ years |

There will be articles like this on toys in the near future. It's the nature of all collectibles.
Someday, when Beanie Babies become rare again (time destroys alot of overstock, just like it does with toys and comic books), then they'll go up in value. Star Wars: Power of the Force It's all about knowing when to buy and more importantly, when to sell.

True enough on the timing. What about in 10 years when all the kids that had beanie babies start collecting?
I do have to say, any collectible is potentially volatile. Look at Star Trek and Star Wars from the 90s. Neither are worth much generally, but then you get one or two pieces that sell very high, then rapidly drop in price. Comic books are the worst for this. Regardless, every line has its hidden gems and holy grails, with a ton of not very valuable items filling space. |

I thought this article was about a friend, lol. In college, circa 1997, they WERE that family. There were like 10 of us and her mom would give us money to buy them and we'd all go into the store and buy them up. I remember at one point they had $3.95 BB's that were being SOLD for $150 bucks and I was SCREAMING at her one night to sell them. They had like five thousand individual BB's and her mom REFUSED to sell them because "They'll be worth $1500 in 10 years!" I tried to explain it since I had been a serious comic and sports card collector and had seen the ups and downs, but she never caught on. I saw my friend the other day and she said her mom still has them all thinking that in another 20 years they'll be worth thousands. Really sad.

Beanie babies were pretty cute for a kid, or a stuffed animal collector.......anything like that will always decrease after the hot phase...see Cabbage patch dolls, anything modern in an old wizard magazine or toyfare mag..etc.
Rarity and desirability trump everything else. It has to be demanded. Collecting anything purely for monetary gain is going to smack you upside the head eventually. if you collect for enjoyment, and you happen to make money all the better. Collecting things for investment is like choosing gambling as a career choice..a few people can do it, but the other 99.5% lose, and lose big.

Thats only a sad story about beanie babies.
When the first set of teenie beanies came out at McDonalds I worked there and we sold out in the first 30mins. We had 100's of phone calls asking about them and people standing in line yelling at us because we ran out. My manager told me to go to all the local McDonalds and pick up as many cases as I could and I came back with 20 cases and I went to around 10 stores. When I came back my manager gave me a salad bag and said take as many as you want. Next day at school kids starting buying them for $5 to $10 each. Then I went after the the others (reg size) and found 6 garcia bears at a local gift shop and lots of others. I sold each of the garcia bears for $65 each. Those things sold well in the beginning. I made over $5,000 off of beanie babies back then. I bought a 1971 chevelle with the money. The bad thing about this is that it got me in the selling craze and I sold off some gijoes that I shouldn't have.
