I usually leave 20%. What makes or breaks an evening for me? Well, I'm a pretty straightforward person. I expect the server to listen and remember, pay attention to our drinks and our needs. Nothing pisses me off more than the server going awol or all of the sudden having a new server or bus people bringing my food. Not a fan. If you are our server and you expect a tip, serve us the food. Food, no matter where you go is going to be comparable, relatively speaking. What sets an establishment apart from the rest is service. It'll keep people coming back. Aside from that, my only other requirement is that the food is palatable. If it is not, I expect some sort of allowance. I'm not a really picky eater, but..... sometimes it's ridiculous the crap they put in front of you. For instance, we went out to dinner last year for my birthday to a descent local restaurant. The place is maybe $150-$200 for the two of us. They have nothing on the menu for vegetarians (my wife and major pain in the ass, bless her... lol.) and when she asked them to make something up, they obliged. What they served us was something that you wouldn't even see at an Applebee's or TGI Fridays. It looked like someone took some vegetables and threw them on a plate. It was pathetic. So..... the executive chef came down from his office and made something that befitted the place. Everyone was a winner and her meal got comped.
But, its things like this that irk me. At the end of the day, no matter where you are, exceptional service makes up for average food. As long as the service is great, I'm great. Last edited by Fidler; 03-29-2009 at 02:57 AM.. |

It embarrasses me when I go out and the people I'm with try and leave a weakass tip. As we're leaving I usually throw a 20 on the table.

Are you guys eating in Hollywood?...J/K I am not talking about any restaurant in general. Just wherever you go and sit down, have a nice meal, and are waited on by servers or bartendars...It could be a Denny's or Applebees. Or even a fancy fine dining type of atmosphere...

Barkeeps usually get a buck per beer or so unless I start a tab. If the wife is along and having her goofy mixed drinks then I sometimes add an extra dollar. If I start a tab (seldom do at a bar-only if I'm paying for a group) then it is back to my standard 20% for good service and so on...

Here in New Orleans, I usually eat with a lady and leave it at that. Many of the people I used to eat with would be cheap on the tip, so I just eat with a woman and pay for both of us + 20% on the tip. |
