Before I ramble I'd first like to say if I have any trades set up with anybody that I haven't made good on please contact me.
Okay...just had one of those "you spend too much time on the computer, your collecting is getting out of hand, what are you going to do with this stuff, you spend too much money" conversations with my wife. Shit hit the fan today when I came home after an afternoon of hunting. All told I dropped about $200 on runs to Target, Walmart and TRU. Picked up both Target exclusive jets, 7 DC Universe Classics, 5 Marvel Universe figures, 2 DC Infinite Heroes, 3 25th Joes and a Star Wars comic pack. I knew that was going overboard but it was one of those days when I had three apples in a row and hit jackpot. I kept thinking she's gonna kill me as I popped them in the cart. Usually she doesn't give me too much hassle, I spread things out and get things here and there....$200 doesn't seem like that big a deal but I guess in this economy it is. She's put up with my collecting for about ten years now. It depends on her mood on how she handles things (hell, she's even called me from the store asking if I had certain figures) Money is getting a little tight, the kids are getting older (and need more) and the bills ain't gettin' any cheaper. Having a grown man in the house with a 3 3/4" crack problem is starting to take it's toll. I've asked myself before the same question...what are you gonna do with all this stuff? Will it ever be enough? will the day come where I say I'm done? When that day does come...then what? Do I put it on display like a museum and charge admission to my basement? As much as I hate to admit it she does have valid points. I'm 36 years old (old enough to know better) and I know I can't be alone in this perdicament. Help me dear Abby....I'm addicted to toys. |

I know the feeling man. I am really glad this modern line has slowed down, and I am only mildly interested in other lines.
I've been only picking up figs if I will actually open them and make use of them in customs or something. that's helped a little bit. luckily my girl isn't totally fed up YET. She still let me get a $60 BMF today at walmart.

but let me tell you of the perils of collecting other 1:18 vehicles! I've been getting some serious complaints about how much space those things take up!

I just had the same conversation with my wife a few weeks ago. I dropped over $2000 on eBay for vintage stuff in Feb., plus another $600 to my brother-in-law for his vintage stuff, and who knows how much I bought at stores (check the list in February Hauls thread, page 3). She was pissed. So, I haven't spent a dime on anything for 4 weeks now. I am able to quit cold turkey thankfully. I can't buy anything until I get a part time job. Oh well, the movie stuff looks like crap to me. I wasn't planing on buying any of it anyway unless it came out on clearance.

well, i'll just say this: some people find it necessary to allow themselves to fall into certain patterns laid out by modern western society that are a byproduct of the current manifestation of instinctual human nature. if you find yourself in that category, and don't have a problem with it, you should probably spend less money of toys.

I kinda was in the same situation about a decade ago. But long story short. You have to learn how to be picky. Pick the best stuff and drop the rest. I collect 1:18 articulated figures only. So take a double look on the toy your are about to buy or open and ask yourself if you really want it and is it going to fit in your life style and not in the closet. For me I dropped buying everything but GI Joe 25th. I also now collect Marvel Universe and a few Star Wars such as sith, troops, and few aliens. That is it. And if I buy anything else its for those worlds. I'm glad the DC, Terminator, Star Trek and a few others figures out\coming out going to suck cause of my articulation quota. You got to give yourself some standards to what you buy. It will make your collection more valuable to you......my 2 cents

Yeah, I've gone exclusively to Joes now. No more Star Wars or MOTU for me.

I guess I find honesty is the best answer. I have a deal with my partner its called budget. I have a budget for each month. If I spend all of it I am done for the month, If I didn't go overboard I have whats left over for the next month. It works for us. Times are rough and sticking to a budget amount keeps the peace.
