i'm budgeting my play money for 'vintage only' these days.
perfect time to pounce since a lot of sellers/collectors are dealing with this recession. we're all susceptible to some degree, it's true. but you have to roll the dice if you want to win big. now's that time. |

I used to have thousands of dollars worth of toys. Seriously, over $25,000 worth at one time. It was too much. I didn't realize how much I really had until I went through my closet. I had been picking it up over the years. Sometimes I would just go crazy on eBay and spend $1,000 in one month on all kinds of things and get 20 packages in the mail. The Post Office hated me. Today, I only have about $600.00 worth, primarily the modern 3 3/4 joes.
My moment of clarity came when I wondered why I had so much stuff packed away in boxes that I rarely took out. It seemed to me that "collecting" them, or rather "the hunt" was far more satisfying. It didn't matter how much I spent, whether it was $5.00 or $2,000 for a single item, I never felt satisfied. In fact, I felt the only way to satisfy my needs was to buy more rare, expensive stuff. Stuff that I used to dream about owning. Well, I got it, enjoyed it for a few days or so, put it in a display case for a few months and then rotated it into my closet full of boxes. I feel collecting is different for everyone. Some people need more and some people can get by with less. I would never recommend just flat out quit collecting. Instead, imagine yourself owning everything you want. Then ask yourself "are you really happy?" I would cut back your collecting. Sell off a bunch to lighten the burden and take a break. Limit your collecting to one figure a week. Remember this, it doesn't matter if 10 days go by or 10 years go by, this stuff will always be there. Sure, the stuff you want may be worth more or may be worth less, but it will still be there. Having less makes you enjoy more of what you have. |
