NO! NO! not the "B" word! Yep. Budget. Make one. Stick to it. Then there are no questions or apologies. Works for me very well.

I met my wife in '91. In '92 I started collecting again. High school took that away, plus there wasn't much I liked enough to spend on toys.
Since '92 I've been collecting, got real bad with the X-Men run then Marvel, etc. Since then she has never told me no to something I wanted to buy. She's been supportive all these years, even when I opened my toy store while her being pregnant with our 1st kid. This past week, she told me no for the first time. It was for a case of the Temple of Doom wave for $90. This was a BIG shock. She was adamant too. It does make you think, why? Why do I have all this stuff, what am I going to do with it years in the future. I can't take it with me, but could sure use the money now. Kids, bills, food (of the out to eat variety). Do stuff with the family. Why buy toys, put them on the shelf and look at them now and then. I sometimes sit in my toy room, staring at the walls and shelves filled with figures, both carded and loose. Sitting there, some dusty, some old. Thinking, we could have done something with that money. I know it's a hobby, something to do. But when you stop and think about it, we use up time searching for the next wave, next series. When we finally get it, a new wave is out and we spend time looking for it and we don't stop and look around us, at our families as they are growing. Sometimes, you buy the figures, take them and put them into a box, or in a storage room. Why? Don't get me wrong, I love all these figures, and I love finding new stuff, but when we reach the pinnacle of our lives, these figures will still be here, going to some relative, hopefully our kids, and that is all we have to show for our lives....toys, unopened and in pristine condition. ok, that's the last time I post while my ambien kicks in. |

I am very, very, very proud of the last 10 posts in this thread.

I just realized I also talked myself out of the first wave of Battlestar Galactica action figures on clearance at BBTS today. Not in the budget, don't NEED them. I've got 2 Arctic HISSes and 2 Stingers on pre-order, plus who knows when those COBRA Island sets are coming up for pre-order and I want one Joe and 2 COBRA sets, and I'm betting those will be at least $50 each if not more. The budget awareness helps you divide what you REALLY want from what you have a passing fancy to get, like that Ozymandias Watchmen action figure (for $17!?) I passed up at TRU today also. |

Gamble, I 100% agree with you. These guys are giving the right advice.
82, sit down and prioritize your life (and budget), then man up and follow those priorities. It's tough as all get out, but if you don't do it, you'll screw yourself. If you do, you'll love life. I guarantee it will be better to follow your priorities than to have that extra figure. Set a realistic monthly budget that aligns with what's important (IE making sure your family and responsibilities are covered first), then supplement that budget by selling off older stuff you don't want/need. I'm at a point right now where I spend about $50 a month on toys, max, and the rest I pay for by selling older stuff. I've even helped cover several large, unexpected medical bills by selling off unneeded parts of my collection. My collection right now is absolutely tiny, but my wife and two children are happy, well cared for, and my financial situation is fairly secure. I may not have the collection I want, but I'm a very, very happy man.

The budget also helps because, at least 'round here, you have weeks of nothing or trickle-trickle then all of a sudden EVERYTHING HITS AT ONCE, and if you've already spent your budget on things you only kinda sorta wanted, well, like I said, it helps you condition yourself to discern what you REALLY want from the passing fancies.
I had to talk myself out of the IJ Temple of Doom action figures at EE also. Another example of the budget at work. Well, that and Hasbro's shitty idea of case assortments. If they'd been all Temple of Doom characters with extra Thuggees they'd have got me. But they didn't. Nanana booboo stickyourheadindoodoo! Last edited by Barefoot Jedi; 03-22-2009 at 12:45 AM.. |
