I started off with Tae Kwon Do when I was 4 and moved on to just about anything I could train after that (but most was with my friends and other martial arts trainers) - Having a brother who won the world championship in Tae Kwon Do in '93 doesn't hurt - He is also part of the Bushido National Group which basically has to do with all martial arts in my country, so I get to meet a lot of top notch people in various branches on martial arts.
For my own sake I started up the first Capoeira Group in my home town and trained with them for about 7 years (strain on my body had me leave for a while). |

I like bjj, it just depends on how the school trains in it. either gi or no gi. The school I am at is a gi school meaning there is no strking what so ever in the bjj classes and alot of the techiques we are taught rely heavily on the gi itself which is completey worthless outside of the school. I dont care how good you are on your back, if you cant weather strikes while still maintaing control of your opponent, its not going to do you any good. Like I said above, I did a handful of years in a mma school and you started on your feet and fought your way to the ground where there was full contact still. The current bjj class I am in there is no striking what so ever, if you want to punch or kick, you have to take the Mauy Thai class. Now alot of the higher belts in our bjj class will school me in class but once we move to the Mauy Thai, Boxing or just free sparing, its a whole new ball game because alot of the guys are not used to getting hit, I have no problem being stuck in your guard as long as I can swing away on you.
I think it sells well because it is the cousin sport of MMA, it allows people contact without striking, theres a huge market because of UFC. When is the last time you saw a UFC'r with a background in Goju Ryu? I dont know..I like it, I have been involved in it for sometime now, but I wouldnt ever try to sell it as the be all and end all martial art which is what people sold it to me as in the begining. Awhile ago I took a self defense course at the same school I took BJJ..we were doing weapon disarms and after my disarm I immediately took the attacker down and began taking his back....I was stopped. My TEACHER said to me.."what are you doing? Why do you want to be on the ground with the dogsh!t and broken glass? Get outta there". That taught me alot! |

[QUOTE=PitViper;585105]I hear ya. I think the gi is good for fundamentals. When we fought gi or no gi, if it was a BJJ class there is no striking at all, then usually AFTER that class the veterans would do an MMA class and we could strike obviously. If you were striking from the guard etc we would hit at like 30-50% and you would just have to respect the punches. I like Gi BJJ as a SPORT and again I think fundamentally its great in teaching leverage and getting you comfortable on your back, and no Gi is pretty much the same. Aside from the collar and the belt..I dont see how it is the most effective self defense method. I think it is a GREAT supplement to a good upright game in the street and again for MMA or sport reasons its ground game is a good card up your sleeve. But really, in the street when is your ground game NOT going to include a "ground and pound"?. I like BJJ, great work out, but I think alot of guys saw Royce Gracie back when and thought it was the be all and end all...unless your a truly gifted grappler it is supplement to Muay Thai and Boxing.

I had to to move to a new area with my mother when I was a teenager. It was not long before I started getting harassed by some kids from a local karate school. One night after a school Halloween dance they jumped me in a parking lot. Fortunately an elderly Asian man from Okinawa came to my rescue. He then taught me the ancient art of wax on wax off and the crane kick. My new found skills and confidence enabled me to win a karate tournament, even after Johnny swept my leg.
