I had Joes as a kid. Since then, I've never collected them until the 25th line. I have never been interested in what they had until the 25th anniversary, showing better sculpts, articulation, and classic-style packaging.
As I do collect other toys (Transformers, Marvel, etc.), I decided to collect only the Cobra figures as not to heavily burden my wallet. Except for a couple of Vipers and Troopers, I only bought one figure for each character. Now, once the Cobra 7-pack comes out with Dr.Mindbender I'm afraid I'll have to quit. I've got my Cobra army, and there's satisfaction in knowing I've started and completed a collection. Besides, I've given up being a completist a long time ago. I'll always be a fan of the cartoon series, and truthfully that is the real reason why I joined Hisstank. |

It's mostly the economy. If you check some of the forums posted last week, a lot of us tankers are currently unemployed and I think that is the major reason why people are selling their stuff. I think the movie toy release is just a coincidence.
And I agree with Justanoldfan that people are selling their collections not because they want too, but they have too. Me personally, I haven't given up on it I just put it on hold until I get a job. I am one of the unfortunate victims of our slumping economy

im not selling my collection but im deffinetly thinning it out, mostly because i got a bit carried away at the beginning and now im just keeping figures i really enjoy and the others can get sold on ebay so i can army build a few figs before hasbro puts out all this movie crap. but i will never sell my main collection. and when joe comes back in 2010 ill be right their ready to get some new joes. but like justanoldfan said a lot of people are selling their collection due to the economy and they dont have the money to keep buying stuff and i understand that completely. times are hard right now.

No, I don't feel this way. What constitutes your definition of a "fair weather" fan anyway? I understand your point of view, but because someone chooses to stop collecting because they are not interested in the movie merchandise - is it fair to criticize them? Are you providing everyone with the funds to build their GI Joe collections on the idea that they MUST buy everything; Is there a specific definition of a "GI Joe collector" or even a toy collector that says we have to buy every piece of plastic they put on the shelves and Internet... Hate to break your heart man, I am building a collection of ONLY those characters I owned in my original collection because I don't have every mother-lovin' character or the new editions of the vehicles - does that make me "fair-weather"? Many collectors I have run into are enjoying the nostalgia and memories that comes with collecting these figures. I think you also have to consider that the economy is hurting everyone in the pockets...some people may have to sell their items not because they want to but because they HAVE to. Before you check to make sure your prediction is coming true, Nostrodamus, check to WHY these things might be happening. |

You are absolutely right but don't you think if someone needs to sell their toys to survive, they prabably shouldn't have been buying toys in the 1st place? Collecting toys should be a luxury that people who are some what stable or comfortable should have, imo. I know I pay bills 1st then put the bulk of the rest of my money in the bank for a rainy day then I buy house hold nessecities and then I buy joes...it seems some people need to get their priorities in order, imo
