the all ages section could be what combat heroes are to 3 3/4 gi joes. everybody knows they're not as cool, but they'd be good for the kiddies.
and as we're all examples of--hook 'em as kids and you can have reivival lines for the rest of their lives!!!! |

I totally get what your saying, I am not a dad but I hope to be one day. Im 32 and have a 8 yr old cousin. All I know is this...He comes into my toy room and see's my Joes, or Marvel, DC etc etc and has NO IDEA who these guys are. But he's keen to the guns and weapons. He knows what thats about because of Grand Theft, because of movies, and horribly crap TV...when we were kids, it was like A-Team syndrome, everyones car flipped and exploded but got out and that was that. Yes of course I knew what the guns and swords were for, but I dont think we as a generation had the same perception of it as todays kids do. Nor do I think there was any intention from Hasbro, Marvel, Saturday Morning/After school cartoons to have that perception. The norm has changed and I think it just stinks.
I walk by the toy sections in these stores and I see A Batmobile and think, what of todays kids wants that over Medal Of Honor?? The people buying that stuff are you and I, guys that are happy to have these things that pay homage to our childhood. I have NO IDEA who the hell the market is for something like Combat Heroes and I totally agree with the movie thing as well......ya know back when I would sit in my room for hours and play with my Joes, then go outside till I was called playing "guns" with the neighborhood kids. It seems so normal and innocent, today if people saw kids doing that an alarm would go off "kids running around with guns!!"....but its ok that 10 yr olds are playing Grand Theft Auto and simulating drug deals and prostitution and watching sex scenes in super hero movies. Stuff has got to change guys. Good luck to all the dads out there who agree with Drew's post, your very unsung hereos! |

Just today I was talking with my girlfriend about how when we were kids (some.. what 20+ years ago), cartoons were on during the week from 7am-8am and 2pm to 5pm and Saturday morning from 7am-11am. That's it. Apart from some specials here and there, you had morning 'toons and afterschool 'toons and SPECIAL saturday morning 'toons. Everything else was "parents tv", BORING!
It made getting up early special and it was something to look forward to when you got out of school. I mean who here DIDN'T look forward to watching G.I. Joe in the morning? Hell I even looked forward to watching Captain Planet (groan these days). So with this pretty limited programming schedule, kids would watch their couple of 1/2 hour shows and then GO OUT AND PLAY. Play with toys! Play with EACH OTHER! Use their imagination! Nowadays.. there are 5-10 different kids channels on cable, showing endless programs for endless different ages of kids. 24 hours a day usually! There is never a time when there isn't "something on". Throw in video games (which I loved as a kid.. NES, Genesis!), which are great, don't get me wrong, but are much more involved these days (for better or worse), and you have kids that don't go OUT and play, don't play with EACH OTHER (maybe online), and don't play with (and thus parent's don't buy) as many toys. I have a 6 year old, and he likes LEGO's, and anything Star Wars, and he even thinks some of my Combat Hero's are cool, but video games are his favorite "toy". I limit what and when he can play, but I cannot MAKE him like playing with plastic toys more. I tried to get him into G.I. Joe figures, but he wasn't really interested so I didn't force it. For whatever reason kids play differently these days, just as we played differently than our parents etc. I remember getting yelled at for playing Genesis too much by my mom because she never had video games as a kid. At the same time, I could spend a whole afternoon behind the couch with toys from 7 different toy lines creating awesome battles with my Joes and be happy as a clam. It would seem kids (generally, not all obviously) these days don't have THOSE experiences as much, but then again I never had the experience of beating LEGO Batman and getting a bunch of XBOX360 achievements... ha! So who knows... Either way, I like the Combat Heroes. |

I am amazed at all of the great responses I have read. You guys give me hope that society may not be as bad as some of us think.
My son loves video games too. But he has grown up watching different DVDs and when I let him watch GIJoe, he watches 90% of it and then actually wants to play with me using the Joes he has (and sometimes I add in a few of mine). That's getting to be fun. I need to get him a friend to come over to play but my wife and I just haven't had the time to start doing that. Getting back to the rating system mentioned a few posts ago, I like having that in place because it gives me a generic guide as to any questionable content in a movie so I can choose myself if my kids can see it. I also like the rating system for video games. I played the Transformers: Autobots and Decepticons games I bought for the DS before I let my son try them. They didn't seem too bad. I will however keep him from playing The Force Unleashed for a while because of some of the voilence in it. A friend of mine is a gun collector and has a son 2 months older than mine and lets him play it (TFU) all the time. I think his son will need to be brought back to reality when he plays with friends due to over acted violence. That is much harder to reign in than my son who will be brought along much more slowly. Times have changed but parental responsibility hasn't. Good talk all... good talk.

I was obsessed with boobs before I knew what GI Joe was. I guess it depends on the kid.
I see where you're coming from with keeping kids from depictions of unnecessary violence, but Iron Man was basically a Disney movie compared to a five minute conversation with third graders on up. Teach your kids to draw, you'll see what's really going on in their heads. Black and red crayons get used up first. Another thing, kids being obsessed with violence and action isn't caused by a media influence at all. It's caused by being a primate. Before television, kids hunted for fun. Slingshots, BBs and .22s were toys and every lizard, squirrel and stray pet was a nazi. |

While it's not the movie and the story is probably completely different, it does look like Marvel is marketing Iron Man to kids:
Iron Man Armored Adventures | Cartoon | Nicktoons Network As for our cartoons, there was sexual innuendo in the Joe cartoon (I swear Lady Jaye was practically throwing herself at Flint all the time ) There was also cussing in the Transformers movie and you know what? None of that ever stuck with me as a kid, the biggest things I remember from the Transformers movie? Optimus Died, Rodimus became leader and there was an evil planet, not the fact that a human and Ultra Magnus cussed. As for GI Joe, I never even noticed all the innuendo being thrown around on there till I watched it as an adult |

Remember too that until Temple of Doom, PG-13 was PG. Gremlins is PG for crying out loud. I have taken my son to PG-13 movies since he was 4, and we have yet to have any problem. I will read up on the movie before I take him, but don't have a problem with it in general. That is what the PG is there for - to let you know that Parental Guidance is required.

This really isn't a revelation is it?
Robocop had toys, Terminator 2 had toys, Aliens had toys... All "blockbuster" movies get toys. Star Wars, Planet of the Apes... This has been going on since the 60's if not before. |

"Teen Titans" from about 2003 to 2006 was probably the closest thing to the formula being suggested. Kid-friendly appeal, mass-produced toys and it was on every day.
But, it had some dark stuff...like Trigon and "Slade". Also, the new "Iron Man: Armored Adventures" involves Howard Stark (Tony's dad) dying in the first episode and Tony getting wired into a heart device. Except now... he's 16. "Static Shock" might be the best direction to go for truly "kid-friendly". Or "Krypto the Super Dog" for younger kids. Both had daily runs in their prime (and Static is still shown on Toon Disney..or "Disney XD"). If you make your show TOO "kid-friendly" and unoffensive, then you've got Teletubbies. Oh...and let's remember that the "Apes" movies were considered family-friendly during their run! The original scared the crap out of me as a wee lad!
