What was the last really great bok you read? Who wrote it, and what was it about?
The last really great thing I read was The Terror by Dan Simmons, a horror story about an expedition to the arctic circle in the 1800s. Very well written. The kind of thing you almost want to start right over again as soon as you finish it. |

Darkest Evening of the Year-Dean Koontz It wasn't his best book, but I love anything by him. Before that I read the first two Twilight books....not bad for chick books.

Mmm, book thread.
Last good story I read was Skinny Dip by Carl Hiaasen. Fantastic story about this idiot who pushes his wife overboard on their anniversary cruise, but she lives. She is rescued by a hermit ex-cop who lives alone on an island off the coast of Florida, and hilarity ensues as he assists her in repeatedly sneaking into their house and messing with things (the husband thinks she's dead) and trying to figure out why he would kill her. I'm also a huge Stephen King nerd. I'd not get me started on that unless you want a looong conversation. Last edited by Foolproof; 02-10-2009 at 08:37 PM.. |

The last one I read I cannot mention on here as it would violate a rule.

GENERATION KILL by Evan Wright about the Marine 1st Recon Division's exploits through Iraq at the beginning of the war. HBO did a mini-series on it but I haven't seen it. the book is awesome, though.
LONE SURVIVOR by Marcus Luttrell about the lone survivor of a 4 man SEAL mission that took on 200 Taliban soldiers in the hills of Afghanistan that turned into the largest loss of life of Special Warfare soldiers when the chopper sent in to rescue them was shot down as the rescuing SEAL team attempted to rope out. if you have any interest in what real G.I. Joes would be like, this is the book for you. these guys kept fighting with thumbs blown off and gun shots to the back, neck and stomach until they were overwhelmed by numbers, and still took out nearly half of the Taliban soldiers. had they not gotten ambushed, and been able to set up an offensive position on the Taliban, they probably could have killed them all. OIL by Upton Sinclair. the movie There Will Be Blood is loosely based on this. but if you like the movie, which I do, it's pretty cool to see how they took such a huge idea and changed it. |
