I have been brainstorming recently about opening another business and would like it to include something in my hobby-collecting. opening a toy store is out of the question so here is my idea--
Preface: i comb these boards a lot and see many traders and buyers getting screwed. I am an attorney and to everyone that has gotten screwed I have so badly wanted to give you information on how to fix your problem but it is against state licensing rules to give legal advice to those in a state I am not barred in so how about this;' I was thinking of offering a safe way to trade over these boards: Send the package to a happy medium. when the business receives both ends of the trade the trade is sent to the intended parties...if one side of the trade is not sent then the package is sent back to the original owner...a simple idea..BUT would this be something you would use Obviously the price would involve double shipping (ship to my business then ship to the other party) plus a couple dollars so smaller trades may not want to use the service but all it takes is for you to get screwed once or have a large trade when this would make sense..... Would you use this service? Is it worth it? I know much of us are not made of money but is the piece of mind worth it? Some people colud even build this cost in their trades...obviously both parties would have to agree to use the service and agree on the same method of shipping.. I do not need feedback on how to physically set the business up and I realize all the required insuances and this would be done via website Feedback people would be greatly appreciated ----good idea or not so good? is there a service like this out there? across all the toy boards, this can or cannot be effective? |

I've not personally had any problems, and all of my trades have been small, but I could see using a service like this for a large trade.

Double shipping? No thanks man....I have done many, many trades on this board and never had a problem. Plus it would take longer. Then youd have to bring a 3rd person (you) into the deal. A for effort, but in the long run a waist of time and more money you could use on other thngs.
Then what would you get out of it? Xtra cash thrown your way? Just for trading fig for fig this would not be worth it.... |

totally not worth it. Its already hard enough to trade as it is. Think about it. I Buy a $7 figure from the store, get tired of it decide to trade for another figure of equal value. I have to get a box, wrap it up, drive to the post office pay shipping. At that point I have already spent over $10 for the figure coming to me. Sucks.
Your idea might make sense if we were dealing with large expensive items but... $3 to $5 figs, doubles our costs just to send them to you. Keep brainstorming

Your idea would work great for say.. e-bay where someone is paying over $500 for a MOC figure or vehicle... but I don't think it would be worth the effort for anything under $100.

I think you misread the original post. He said for trades. Once you pay for something it shouldn't have to be sent somewhere before it is sent to you. He is referring to trades.

most people are looking to trade than spend cash. there are tons of forums with the buy sell trade threads.this is to usually avoid a 3rd party transaction.

Still a lot of potential for problems--higher chance something would get lost, and if it gets lost while in hands of 3rd party who is responsible? Still the chance of "Well I sent it" when one party never did.

This defeats the purpose of trading.
With you're idea, you're actually creating the middle-man we all WANT TO AVOID! Double shipping? No thanx. I know your heart is in the right place. But if you'd had thought this thru all the way, you'd understand that trading thru message board threads is a collector's way to deal directly with the source by cutting out all middle-man interaction. |
