So I went to this shopping mall last weekend. It was an older one built prob late 70's early 80s. Now I loved going to malls when I was a kid. Usually whatever mall we went to had a toy store in it (KB Toys) etc.
I used to go hang out out the malls in jr. high and high school. So lots of good fun memories around malls. But this mall is what you would call a "dead mall." It was probably only 50% full. Of the remaining 50% you had Elder Berman as the anchor and most of the other stores were Mom and Pop. So as I was walking down the hallways of this mall it made me sad. Looking at the the label scars on the entrances of the closed buildings: Chick-fil-A, Samy Goody, Electronic Boutique, Game Stop, KB Toys etc etc. I guess what made me kinda sad was thinking about when this mall was in it's heyday (1980's) it was more than likely booming. Families probably went out to eat at the restaurants across the street then take their kids to the toy store inside the mall. When I was walking around this very quiet mall I couldn't help imagine that in the 80's it was probably loud with kids talking, cash registers ringing, music playing on the speakers. Now this mall is just a shell of its former self. So does anyone have a shopping mall like this where you live? we have several malls like that..although many are adapting blowing out huge sections for bigger stores like Marshalls, etc... I used to love malls...book store, toy store, cookie store, quality fast food like chick fil a and arthur treachers, record store, novelty shop, game room, sometimes small hobby stores, etc etc etc....huhhhhhhh...I miss that .

I watched the slow decline of Park Lane Mall on Plumb Lane in Reno, Nv over the years before I moved to sunny southern California. The last time I went there, about half the shops were closed. There were more employees than customers. Went back a couple years ago and it was completely bulldozed. It was pretty sad because I saw my first Cobra Commander figure there at the Kay*Bee Toys in 1983. I bought alot of Joes at that mall. I got Crystal Ball, Leatherneck, Zarana, Zandar, and Dr Mindbender at Sears, and Cobra Commander at Kay*Bee. Not all at the same time obviously. Dead Malls are only good for one thing: making zombie movies. Or maybe playing a huge game of Hide & Seek/Laser Tag (original Worlds of Wonder version of course). Okay that's two things.

There's two malls in my area that are dying or have died. One, Westgate was my favorite because it was small and I could have the whole place to myself when I shopped there. They ended up knocking it down and replacing it with an outdoor commons style mall. It seems to have worked, it's a lot busier now. The other is Parmatown. A mall thats half empty now and has a huge hallway where the storefronts were covered up and now show bathtub remodeling samples. It's a bit like "Dawn of the Dead" in there now. They're supposed to do the same thing they did with the other mall, and knock it all down and just leave the anchor stores.

Eastgate now houses a full blown Data Center now. You'd never know it from the outside, but there is a grey door on the north side of the building with a card scanner on it. Inside is another 2 set of cage doors, then you are on the floor of the lower level of the old mall surrounded by cage after cage of servers. My old company, Wishard and Homeland Security have co-lo services there. Again, no one would know if you didn't notice the door or possible the chiller towers outside.

We used to go to Rolling Acres mall in Akron, OH. On a Saturday in the mid 90s it was packed solid. Fast forward to 2002 and it is just leather stores and tax places with a Sears, JC Pennys and a Target. A few years later the Target shuts down, the inside is empty and the Sears is gone. Now it is just a JC Pennys outlet and a the rest is closed. I took this pic form the chained up doors at the back of the store a couple months ago:
http://www.hisstank.com/forum/attach...1&d=1363652467 The outside is a warzone. The lot is 90% potholes, there was a glass front from an old Dilliards that is all shattered, and the Sears is now some sort of recycling center with a bunch of trash piled 15 feet high outside the loading docks. Scary.

We got one near here, used to be booming with an arcade and food court and all kinds of stores. now it's a few mom and pops, a struggling Gamestop, and a K&W cafeteria (we call it Kanes and Walkers cafeteria). The mall has basically been claimed by old people, and they powerwalk all day long in there in velour jumpsuits. the place smells like mothballs and sweat.

Cottowood Mall was a pretty cool hangout, the stores inside slowly went away until the entire thing got demolished.
Then more recently, downtown Salt Lake City, was Crossroads Plaza and the ZCMI Center Mall. All gone and a new place created in it's location called City Creek. It's weird to think about the era of malls going away. |
