I was born and raised in Long Beach, ca and I live in Texas now and theres not a fricking day goes by that I dont wanna pack up and get the hell out of this backwoods armpit.
I'll take the worst, most fucked up part of los angeles over the best of dallas any time. the weather sucks, the folks are generally alright, but there's this underlying sense of racism everywhere...real good ol boy redneck attitude that simply does not exist in southern cali. but at least there's no earthquakes. oh wait, scratch that...we had a minor tremble in Irving a few weeks back. yee-haw.

no racism in Socal? Are You living in a bubble dude?
I grew up in Culver City and it was very, very racist when I was in High School. racism is everywhere in this country jack138 trust Me. I have lived in about 13 different states in My life time. From the great North West to the South East and, there are people full of hate in each place i have lived. To the op. Do not sweat it man but, just roll with the punches. Your going to a place that has opportunity for Your Wife and Yourself that You do not have where Your at now...and that is a GOOD thing. There is always a certain amount of "culture shock" when You move from one part of America to another but, this seems like a promising one for You! So look on the bright side of things and, just take it as it comes. Nothing else You can do right? Congrats on the job landing by the way!

Ah yes.. Austin Texas. I lived there for 2 years because I got a job there. I wished you were moving somewhere else because there is more people than there is space in Austin. It's waaayyy to OVERCROWDED!! The traffic is completely horrible. Don't move on the east side and don't be a white boy over there after midnight. I lived in an apartment complex over there and I swear there was an ambulance in that complex every night. The only reason I survived was by the graces of God. Sixth street is packed on Friday and Saturday nights and yes.. you can be stabbed if you go down the wrong alley over there too. I got out as fast as I could into a small town outside of Waco and have lived here since 2000 and I am very happy with non-crowded streets and highways and the fact I can walk around after midnight without being jumped and killed!! But heck, you may live down there and find out it's heaven. Just keep us posted on your journeys in Austin.

I grew up in El Paso and went to CA for college and stayed for a few years after that. I've been to Austin plenty of times and it is a fantastic city! Lots to do, great food, and the people really are nice. TX is different than CA but different doesn't mean bad. While TX is a bit more conservative than CA (duh) Austin is pretty progressive with a good mix of ideologies. It's also a diverse city like those in CA. I can't imagine anyone not liking Austin. I'm also partial to Whataburger even though In N Out also rocks! Completely different burgers but both with their own positive attributes. Good luck and enjoy yourself! I wish I lived in Austin right now!

i know what you are going through, 3 years ago i made the move from nyc to houston. it was a complete culture shock. i guess the ajustment was some what easy for me because im kind of laid back for native ny'er. every now and then i get really home sick, you will probably go through that as well. im not really familar with austin but texas is a great state, one of the few states that actually has a good economy.

Sad to see you go, bro. I have family in that area and I have been there twice now. It's a different world out there. Believe it or not, the lack of mountains freaked me out more than anything. You and I are of the same ilk, both born and raised in Cali, in the same basic neighborhood.
Things I noticed: Better gas prices, friendlier people (for the most part), great food (though I did have some Tex-Mex that didn't sit right), and cheaper housing. Things that suck: Tornados, and the occasional flooding.
