So the novel by David Morrell is way, WAY different than it's movie counterpart.
First Blood the movie made it out to where you could be somewhat sympathetic to Rambo, and the situation he was in. In the book ANY sympathy for Rambo or the character of Will Teasle is more than they deserve. The story is NOT about Rambo being an awesome guy who is just "misunderstood". No, it is about two men who would not back down from what they percived to be "right". It's more about male bull-headedness, and ego than it is about "AWESOME SURVIVOR DUDE WHO WON'T TAKE CRAP FROM ANYBODY!!!". In the book Rambo knew no ethics, and the ethics or morals he did know he disobeyed in favor of violence. The movie hinted at what the book was actually about, but would always side a little more with Rambo. The book was equally as much about the sheriff as it was about Rambo. Neither Rambo nor the sheriff were capible of handling the athourity they were given in each of their chosen feilds. Neither had ethics or morals enough to do what they were required to do with the athourity they were given. This lead both the main characters to a demise that neither would have wished for. I always loved the first Rambo movie, and stuck up for it when people would put it down. Now I will find it a little harder to do so. I always liked all the Rambo movies, but understood that all of them after the first one were crap. They were crap, but I still liked them, and still do. However now I feel that the movies missed the point all together, therefore taking away any validity they had in the first place. The cartoon definitely missed the point With as many remakes as they are pumping out these days, I'd have to say that after reading the book i woulden't mind seeing First Blood get remade. It would have a lot of fan boys up in arms, and Harry over @ ain't it cool news would have a shit fit. But screw those guys. Get Stallone to direct it or something, and the bitching would all be over with. If they stuck to the book, and didn't get some douche like Vin Diesel to star in it, it could easily be way better than the original. Last edited by delta; 01-22-2009 at 12:16 AM.. |

I actually looked at the movie like that to begin with... from the get go. Rambo could have easily just walked away, but where would the story be in that?
IF they were to remake it, they could easily put a more contemporary spin on it. A veteran of (any) OIF perhaps? It could be a very interesting, character driven drama... with bloodshed of course. Otherwise it wouldn't be Rambo. |

In the book rambo showed no remorse, and just kept on killing, and killing, and killing. I think he killed over 20 people by the time the book was over. Hell they sometimes only kill 13 people in a friday the 13th movie!! Remember in the movie first blood when Rambo came up on a little kid hunting with his "paw"? In the movie rambo lets the kid go, in the book both boy and "paw" are dead. Rambo was a real sadistic bastard in the book. I don't think that would be the best idea either. Just stick to the source material I'd say. Now-a-days they can catch people like rambo with inferd radars and stuff. But then again there are people like Eric Robert Rudolph who stay on the run for quite a while, so you may have a point. Last edited by delta; 01-22-2009 at 01:00 AM.. |

I just found this in the wiki file under Firts Blood.
"Stallone’s star power after the success of the Rocky films enabled him to suggest changes to the script, to make the character of John Rambo more sympathetic. While Morrell's book has the Rambo character violently kill many of his pursuers, in the movie version Rambo does not directly cause the death of any police or national guardsmen." Now I have always liked Stallone, and have stuck up for him as an actor, but that is B.S. in my book. "Just before shooting began, Kirk Douglas quit the role of Col. Trautman over a script dispute; Douglas wanted the film to end as the book did, with the death of the Rambo character." Kirk "powderd toast man" Douglas had a good point. After reading the book I'm thinking Rambo was more like this and less like this Last edited by delta; 01-22-2009 at 04:56 PM.. |

I never knew that Rambo was based on an original book. Now I'm interested in reading it.

The book was out years before the movie.
BTW, if anyone actually bases their thought about anything on what Harry at Ain't It Cool says.. then you seriously need help.

Yes it was. The thing that sucks about it is i no longer see myself enjoying the film.

Stallone drops Q. and A. sessions over at aintitcool. So if he was like "Yo! I'm directing a remake of First Blood". They would be like "Wow this is a great idea!! let me tell you why!!". But if it were done by say an indie film director I feel it would get widly panned by sites like ain't it cool. However if a remake of first blood started to shape up like the remake of Death Race 2000 did (another kick ass Stallone film). That would be terrible. |

First Blood isn't that bad a movie, even when looking at it thru the book-glasses.
It's Rambo Part 2 that just doesn't work. It took a character and made him into something he wasn't (this incredibly skilled warrior).

I'd like to see a straight adaptation of the book that would show Rambo, and Teasel BOTH at fault like it did in the book. Like I said the movie hinted at that, but often sided more with Rambo. Quote:
The third Rambo film sucked out loud. Even when I was a kid I thought so. The last one (part 4) was good, but never should have happend. People seem to think now-a-days that if you show masses of people in a third world country getting blown up that you have an Oscar caliber movie on your hands. RAMBO 4 was as good as anyone could have asked it to be, and I like it, but I'd be more satisfied if they had done First Blood right, and there were no sequels. |
