Okay, I'm a single guy with no kids in his late 20's and I toy hunt frequently at various stores like Wal Mart, Target, Toys R Us, etc. One thing I've noticed over the years is just how weirded out people, specifically parents with their kids, on toy aisles get by my presence. And for the longest time I haven't cared, just minded my own business.
I mean I can see where they come from...I'm a 6'4" slightly overweight white guy who quietly enters toy stores and goes up and down toy aisles, so, yeah sure even though I don't have kids I understand why a few parents glare or get nervous when I walk in. And like I said, for the longest time I haven't cared about this... But lately it's gotten out of hand. Maybe it's because it's Christmas break, and all the kids are out shopping with parents, or maybe it's the fact I've been working out more lately and just look that extra bit more menacing, or maybe both. It's gotten so bad to the point where, like the other day at TRU, I was standing on an aisle quietly sifting through the Transformers pegs, until all of a sudden I hear a Mom at the end of the aisle screaming "BILLY!!!! Come here now, now, HURRY!!!". I then casually look around and realize there's a little kid standing right next to me, who I honestly had no idea was even standing there until the screaming lunatic down the aisle burst my eardrums with her shriek. I'm 38 btw.

I don't know, how do people know you don't have kids at home? This is really weird. Ive never experienced this, Im 36, LOOOOOOONG hair, huge and numerous earrings, covered in tattoos, 5'10, 225lbs (lift weights daily), etc. I look a little scary matter of fact, but never have I noticed a parent looking at me funny, etc., in a toy isle. Granted I USUALLY have my 5 year old or my wife with me, but not always. But then again, maybe I just don't care or notice people noticing me.

There's just no winning in this day and age. Most people are paranoid, under educated, and not fit to be parents (let alone married). I wouldn't worry about it much, b/c at the end of the day people who make judgments like that are not worth wasting your time on. They're just shallow, PC, brainwashed sheep. If I had kids I'd be less concerned about the people on the toy isles at department stores, and more about the kids at school. Only a idiot lets a child wander out of their site.

Glad to hear all the insight from all of you. Got some good news too, when I pulled up in the driveway this afternoon, I saw my neighbor, the husband, sawing up a tree that snapped during the ice storm last week. I walked over and shot the shit with him for a second, and offered to help him lug all the logs up the hill, since he was gonna store them in his garage for firewood. I eventually brought up the incident at TRU with his wife and the random mom, and explained to him just how bad his wife's perception of the situation must have been, and he laughed saying he hadn't heard anything about it from her, but he'd get around to talking to her to clear any misperceptions she may have going on about it.
So all should be well, my neighbor's a cool dude, and he seems to understand exactly what was going on at TRU that day. Afterall, he's white, and in his 70's with all white hair and strikes an uncanny physical resemblance to Jerry Sandusky, so I bet he's probably gotten some weird looks while shopping for his grandkids or what not.

I have kids and so I understand the concern from a parent perspective. However one thing you may not be thinking about is the other side. Perhaps the parent thinks the kids are in Your way, the children are bothering YOU as a shopper. I know my kids do this sometimes at stores and I get fustrated and think people are getting upset with me as a father not "controling" my children and honestly thats a very upseting thought.
I try to Hunt without the kids cause its easier and I am usually very fast I dont dwell to much in the toy section I am in and out. But dont let it get you down think of it this way. You could be a dad or uncle or whatever just shopping no one knows. Kids dont have money your more entitled to be there than a kid who cant buy anything! LOL. but its cool to have kids liking toys. I too have helped parents out mainly telling them to buy something at ross and not toys r us if I know I have seen it there. And yeah what's up with that Ross has been getting a lot of the same stuff as TRU and selling it much cheaper. The DCUC War of Green Lanterns and Azrael/Batman two packs recently sold there for almost one third less than TRU charges. And the other day I saw about 4 Mortal Kombat 7 inch Shao Khans for $7 a piece, the same figures that are selling for about $20 at TRU....craziness, I really hope Ross gets into Marvel Legends soon

Whatever they think, I'm like you, I really don't care. I'm just going from A to B and minding my own business every step of the way. I'm in that toy store or on that aisle for one reason, and that's for my own benefit. And even though I am aware and somewhat conscientious of the people around me, I'm not sensitive to their opinions or presumptions about me.

I was a hard case but not as bad as my wife. She would bring the pain quick if they stepped outta line. Boy, I hate seeing bratty kids and incompetent parents in public! Oh btw, you creepy men on the toy isle, quit looking at my kids... |
