I just got this email from a friend. It was talking about some bad experience he had at Best Buy. They charged him like 15% for a restocking fee for a GPS system that was 45.00!! I currently am in a small rage about Best Buy anyway. I think they are a bunch of morons myself. My wife bought me Rock Band 2 on Black Friday. Two weeks later.. Target had it for 45.00. So we took the ad to Best Buy and showed them hoping to get the 15.00+ back from them. They called the Target store and when they found out Target had none in stock... they wouldn't give my wife the 15.00 back. Since we had a receipt... she just said well give me my 60.00 back and we will go to Wal Mart and do business with them. And that's exactly what we did!!! Besides that.. what the hell is with the RESTOCKING FEES anyway??!! I noticed a toy store that is online even has this ridiculous fee!! Somebody explain this ridiculous fee. Why should you have to pay extra to have something restocked... are the employees on break or something and you have to pay extra to get their lazy ass to do it or what?? My gosh.. if you bought a 2000.00 tv and brought it back... it would cost you another 300.00 for them to take it from you!! That's just plain out EXTORTION!!!!

I got the same forwarded email. About a GPS and everything. It's not true though. Best Buy does not charge a restocking fee on GPS units. ONLY on Notebook computers and Cameras. The reason being is they have to sell the unit open box afterwards and take money off. There is hardly any markup on cameras and notebooks so The company would loose money on every returned Camera and Notebook.

BestBuy.com Help: <Topic>
Restocking fee A restocking fee of 15% will be charged on opened notebook computers, projectors, camcorders, digital cameras, radar detectors, GPS navigation and in-car video systems unless defective or prohibited by law. A restocking fee of 25% will be charged on Special Order Products, including appliances unless defective or prohibited by law. Unless it still new and taped or whatever.. they may take it back... but why a restocking fee?? WHY????!!! Last edited by The Batman; 12-28-2008 at 09:37 PM.. |

well it must be a MA law because they don't have it here. Only notebooks and cameras. As to why have them. I can tell you why.
A. The items you listed are things people will often buy as "rentals" IE buy a GPS for a vacation then return it. This discourages that from happening. The fee is only charged for a return, not an exchange. So if you don't like the model you bought and want to get something else, there won't be a fee. Also like I said in my previous post, Notebooks especially there is very little to no margin on them. What you pay for them is usually cost or in the case of a sale sometimes below cost. When they are returned they have to be sold open at a discount. Causing the company to loose money. The fee re-coupes that and again discourages a return or using the prodct as a rental. Also with notebooks They have to be restored so personal data is wiped off the machine. While this doesn't require too much labor to do, it requires room up at the workbench, room that could be being used to fix a paying customer's computer. So that return starts affecting them. A restore typically takes 2-4 hours depending on the model. Then they have to put the best buy software on the machine, another hour or 2. That's a lot of time that someone else has to wait for there to be room if the place is backed up. |

Some Stores have always had these policies, but with the Economy as it is, they're getting criminal with them, that's why I always ask about store return policies when buying these days, so I can see, what kinda crap they're pulling and if it's worth putting up with it.

They say the same thing at the Victorville, California store. It's where I bought my laptop & my Cannon Rebel digital camera.

Why don't you call Best Buy and ask them about the restocking fee if it is a problem.
If it has been opened, they have to sell it for a lower price than an unopened box, which I am guessing is why they charge the restocking fee. I am sure if it was an unopened item, they would not charge a fee at all. But this has been said in a previous post. |

I worked at an electronic store. We used to have guys come in and buy 50" tvs a week before superbowl weekend. Then they'd return the TV before the 30 day return policy. There was no restocking fee and the store has to sell the tv at a discount now. Restocking fees are completely justified. But on a GPS unit, it's probably a bit overkill. |
