Yesterday was a sad day for the sport of Boxing, because the legendary Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward died due to complications from surgery. He was an excellent trainer who helped lead many men to titles, and I really did enjoy him as a boxing analyst for HBO. He was so good in fact, he almost always correctly picked the winner of the fights he was going to be covering. I say almost in part, because the only fight that I really remember him being wrong was the last Manny Pacquiao fight. There might have been other occasions, but I can't really say that I truly remember any. In my opinion he really wasn't wrong about that Manny fight either. Almost everyone that saw that fight thought Manny got robbed in that one.

I didn't even know who he was until I saw his pic... he was around when Heavyweight boxing was still awesome; he trained champions from 3 different boxing eras too. I remember those epic back and forth Holyfield vs. Riddick Bowe matches... man, I miss Heavyweight boxing; now it is a bunch of no names and those Russian brothers beat up all those no names. 68 is still way too young.

Emmanuel wasn't a perfect man, did some questionable things when Ali was under his stewardship. But he was one of the greatest trainers of all time, he had an eye for the sport that very few have. He's on a very short list of very amazing trainers. And of course he has a legacy that is truly legendary. I'm sure guys like Teddy Atlas, Freddie Roach, Oscar, Michael Moorer, (ando ther great trainers or fighters-turned-trainers I've forgotten to mention) are in deep mourning and know they lost one hell of a mind to pick. Let alone all the fighters under Emmanuel that I'm sure feel utterly lost.
When I lost my first trainer it was like losing a father, then I got taken under Gene Fullmer's wing, then Eddie "The Flash" Newman's, it's been good. I always wanted to meet Emmanuel Steward, Gene did a few times, if I recall correctly. (It was over 10 years ago) |

I did video interviews with Many boxing personalities one of which was Manny Steward. You can see them on YouTube at novirasputin2's channel - YouTube
He was a good guy. I still have the Kronk shirt he gave me. So many of the guys I interviewed have passed. Carmen Basilio died recently as well
