Wal-Mart and Target have been hammering TRU's sales considerably for several years now, so much that TRU had to close 87 stores in '06 (and convert a dozen more TRUs to Babies R Us not long after) and restructure their remaining stores.
But TRU currently operate 585 TRUs in the US, and according to toysrus.com, "more than 670 Toys R Us stores and 20 Babies R Us stores in 33 countries outside of the United States," and they're starting to open up Super Toys R Us stores in the US, so hopefully, the company's on the rebound. |

It's sad to see KB going the way of Childworld(another toystore from my youth). But echoing the sentiments of the other posts..this has been foreseen for a long time coming. The last KB in my area closed last year.I remember when they were called KB Toy and Hobby and actually sold model kits and science kits too.A shame....

There is only one thing to blame for toy sales declining. They already put 99% of the world's hobby stores out of buisness, its

This is sad. I saw it coming but it sucks. Now all my childhood stores are gone, Toys R Us us the last man standing. Caldor, Bradlees, Childworld, Kidstuff, Super X drugstores, McCrory, Woolworths, now KB, ALL GONE.
I'm gonna go take some pics of the store while they're still open. I wish I had some pics of all those other stores, just for the memories. I found a few on websites like deadmalls.com & The Caldor Rainbow but I wish I had some of my own. Especially Bradlees on "The Dock" in Stratford CT. I have a ton of awesome memories from that store & now it's gone. Got my G1 Jetfire there. Those were the days. *sigh* |

I'm of the same mindset you are. I got wave 3, I think..the DDP Zartan wave, at a KB's in my hometown. It wasn't long after this that I found out one of the employees was selling the Joe shipments to the owner of the comic book store across the street. I feel bad for anyone who might lose their job over this, but it's really been a long time coming. There's no justification for charging 2 or 3 or 4 more dollars for a product you can buy elsewhere for that much less. It reflects a problem with one of the two retailers. Personally, I point my finger at Wal-Mart and their ilk more than I do KB's. But it really doesn't matter to me when I have to buy everything on-line, anyway.

Man, our KB closed a long time ago. It was cramped and had toys taht were sometimes 5 years old still sitting on pegs, but it was someplace to go for fun in the mall.
I don't even really go to the local mall near me anymore cause all the stores I liked inside it are gone. Suncoast, Sam Goody, B Dalton, KB Toys...all gone... Only place left in the mall for me is Best Buy, and I have one closer to where I live for things. I also live like 20-some miles away from the Mall of America. When that first opened they had a TON of awesome stores in it. Nowadays, the KB there is gone, all but GameStop is gone for electronics, the hobby stores are gone...heck, the whole fourth floor is basically a ghost town aside from the movie theater and a HOOTERS restaurant.... Nothing left but clothing stores and themed restaurants. |

KB was never the greatest, but I will miss them. There's 2 KBs and 1 KB Toy Works in my area. The Toy Works and 1 of the KBs are still semi-regular stops on my toy runs. Their normal prices have always been high, but I've had good luck with clearance items on more than one occasion. Mainly it bums me out because it sort of signifies the changing of the toy-buying landscape from dedicated stores to Target, Wal Mart, and online shopping. |

And yeah, Circuit City is closing as well, I've been following it on The Consumerist. I have no problem with that, seeing as how a few years ago, they laid off more than half their employees and then offered to rehire them for less pay. That's just bad business. And the way things are going, in 20 years we might have different names of stores, but they'll all be owned by Walmart. Don't think so? Watch this flash animation and tell me I'm wrong.
