As it stands now, ALL the toy lines are far smaller than they have been in recent years. A line like TMNT is pretty limited and is likely to be pretty popular. SW has been pretty constricted recently - particularly with vehicles mostly being repaints or re-releases. TFs haven't sold quite as well recently, but the classic-ish toys tend to sell well around here (although, the recent video game figures aren't selling that well). Batman and Avengers aren't selling that great, nor has Spider-Man.

The long-running nostalgia brands (as well as many attempts to revive other nostalgia-properties) are hurting, but action figures in general are doing OK.
It basically boils down to the poor economy making a lot of collectors back off or stop collecting altogether (where the nostalgia-brands, by which I mean G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Star Wars). |

They're down, but from what I can see, things that are largely outside our collecting preferences are doing better than the nostalgia/collector-focused brands. There certainly don't seem to be any "distribution problems" with Ben 10, Bakugan, Wrestling figures, or the Dark Knight Rises 3.75/4 inch scale toys.

Action figures will be dead when, and only When you pay the amount you would like to pay for figures on ebay...with that said, I think were a long way off still.

Action figures are not dead, but I think we've reached the point where the ability to meet multiple desires (collector, kid, retailer, parent, x degree of profit for manufacturer) is significantly lower than it used to be. Not that they are doing as well as they were, say, 5 years ago, much less 10 or more.
My observations? If a film/show/etc is sufficiently popular to the right segment, the product WILL sell, and sell well. Avengers is doing pretty good around here, as is the new TMNT line and Beyblades. Right now, the economy crunch and aging demographics I feel are hurting a LOT of the collector lines that don't have kid crossover (like Star Wars or Transformers), and that's about all collectors appear to be "seeing".

Have you been following what the economists are predicting for the near future starting in 2013? *IF* it comes true we're not even gonna be able to get food. Complete dollar collapse & another great depression. The toy companies will probably all go under.
If that doesn't happen then I think we'll be getting dollar store junk. Action figures are already starting to go backwards by cutting out articulation. They're getting crappier while we have to pay more. Now is a really good time to quit this hobby before things get really bad. Either the economy is going to get really bad or the quality of the figures, either way things are going down the toilet fast. |
