You should watch the original Gunbuster anime, if you haven't already. The aliens are like large insects, but their large "ships" and such are essentially even larger organisms. They can even warp through space. They need to nest inside or near a star IIRC, and that's why they are threatening Earth.
Hilarious!

Alien invasions are the stuff of science fiction. If aliens existed, which is highly unlikely, and they had the technology to get here, then I think their society would of had to of first evolved past the whole invade and conquer mentality.
Alien explorers are far more likely than invaders and aliens in general are very unlikely to begin with. |

Or worse. They thought the television, telephone, automobile, cell phone, internet, text messaging, fast food & drive thru's would make our lives better. They were so fucking wrong! Now we're a society of obese, anti-social, self-centered, overly independent pricks with tons of health problems! All the technology that was supposed to help us ended up kicking our asses. Do you know your neighbors name? Probably not. Most of us don't know it nor do we care. But we care what's on TV. Because sitting on the couch being a lazy fat-ass is more important. There have been many alien invasion movies and series of late. They usually end with a happy hollywood ending with america on top. I am so sick of this ending. Why can't a writer ever write seriously about this subject?
We do know from history that an advanced civilization meeting a primitive one will not end well. Just ask the native people of the americas. Furthermore, why do the aliens appear humanoid? Yes there are limitations to budgets and effects. But when a real first contact happens I don't expect another humanoid who understands human rights and human centric thinking. These aliens could be methane breathers, have ten eyes, have tentacles, lay eggs, etc…. Why would an alien be just like us? Is it too taboo to write about doomsday scenerios where humanity loses? We've written about end of the dinosaurs. Is it too hard to imagine humanity not surviving alien invasions? Bottom line, people don't like nihilistically depressing films, which all of those would be. And yes, basically humans are arrogant and have an underlying belief that they are "special" in the universe. |

There are so many more variables than the size of the universe and the number of planets that the odds of there being life out there are pretty slim.
If lighting struck again, and another planet capable of supporting life did arise, then I would expect that the life on it would be a lot like ours because of evolution. The size of the universe makes it almost statistically impossible that intelligent life doesn't exist somewhere else out there. Even if only one world in a million develops life, and of those one world in a nillion develops intelligent life, there would still be millions of types of intelligent life forms out there. Like others have said...I don't think they've been visiting us, but to think it's "unlikely" that they're out there is really not in keeping with the facts at hand, or have a view of the universe that is vastly smaller than it actually is. However I will agree on one point: Any race capable of interstellar travel with any sort of efficiency (read: speed) has indeed likely evolved well past "invade and conquer" and "biological imperatives." Because the amount of power necessary to create ships capable of either approaching lightspeed or "folding" space (which many physicists believe is possible) are so immense (We're talking harnessing the equivalent energy of a star's entire lifetime multiple times over) that their scientific and technological knowledge would long have surpassed the need for anything our pathetic little orb could provide. |
