I don't keep track, but my general rule of thumb is to give rather than lend. Give and expect nothing in return.

Never, ever, ever lend a friend or family member money. Don't do business with people you want to remain close with. I think you're right to see it as a gift. Give what you can without putting your own situation at risk. But if he's single and you have a family, your first responsibility is to take care of your family.

I once sold a buddy a car on the arrangement that he would pay me in installments of $100.00 per week for 15 weeks. He totaled the damn thing drunk before making one payment. He lost his spleen and got a DUI out of the deal. He never payed me back, but I did have a man servant for about three years. It was awesome. He did so much work for me I think I actually came out ahead in the long run. Just for the record, there was nothing sexual about it.

A few months after he "bought it" from me, a car load of Mexicans without insurance hit him, totaled it and fled the scene on foot. I had rebuild the motor, the transmission, replaced a lot of the body, replace the rims and bought off road tires, and in the end insurance gave him $1600. That was 8 years ago. He still hasn't paid me back and it's still a sore spot between me and him. |

I lent a buddy $500 to avoid having his legs broke by other people he owed money to.
This was, '96...? I think he paid off about $100, took him forever, then we both moved to different cities & did not communicate for years. Saw him at a party in '06 told him I want some money...gave him my contact info...was all cool then just never heard from him. Saw him again a year ago at a party, he had a wife & kid(infant). Just handed me a wad of cash when he saw me...told him don't worry about it, spend it on his kid. Debt forgiven, let's move on. I would have spent it on stupid ish anyway but lesson learned, don't lend what you can't write off. If it were me the only thing I'd give him is good advice...get out of real estate and get whatever job you can so you can support yourself.

So I met up with my friend who wanted to borrow $5000. He showed up 25 minutes late and i almost decided to not meet him. The reason he needs it is for his real estate broker business. He refuses to get a stable job and has blown through 15 years of savings, despite earning $100K on some years. None of his family or friends would lend him the money he wanted. I felt really frustrated he didn't want to consider doing something more stable. I told him it's fine to own your own business as long as you have adequate capital to withstand times of low business activity. You can't do it when you have $0 in the bank. It's not he needed for an emergency. Throughout this he made it sound all business which aggravated me even further. I didn't want to give even a penny. But I told him I'm just going to this out friendship. I went to a Citibank ATM, withdrew and reluctantly gave him $300. I told him I didn't want to give him $200 extra because he wasn't convincing at all. I'm really annoyed that all this is self inflicted so he didn't deserve anything, but he's a good friend so I had to give him something. He's behind his rent this month.
