Treats people like shit? No.
I currently work at a Target store. They constantly are offering me special incentives (store merch and food) for signing up people for Red Cards (Target credit and debit cards are labeled as "Red Cards"). Now before people go off about pushing credit cards etc, know this... I personally use the Target debit card. I know all of the ins and outs of what is good and bad about it. I make it my mission to inform guests of the opportunity of savings and the more they want to hear (only about 20% ask about more info) the more I inform them of those ins and outs. So by the time the person tells me they do want to sign up (between 0-6 guests per shift) they are informed as much as I am able of what they are getting into. Because I do not object to offering the opportunity of savings (not PUSHING as I always let guests back out or stop me if they wish) and I know how to offer the program in a pleasant manner, I am well rewarded. This saves me a ton of food bills and helps my collection grow as well as provides the occasional prize for my kids too. As for Target credit cards I actually discourage them in my presentation because I have personally found 90%+ of guests do not want to go near them. I hate them myself as I am not one of the very few Americans who can properly manage them. So, in the end, what I am saying is I am rewarded for doing my job. In my annual review, there is a section that mentions promoting corporate programs to guests. So offering Red Cards is my job. If I don't like that, I can go work somewhere else. But when I do my job, I get free stuff. Also, Target has a Great Team card program where employees (Team Members as Target refers to us) can recognize other employees. You fill out a card that is a little larger than a business card stating how the other team member helped you out or did a great job and you present it to them and they put it on the bulletin board for all to see. Then at the end of the month, all of the cards are taken down and put into a hat where a few of them are drawn out to win prizes for those who are recognized. Also, there is constantly free food in the breakroom, there is a 32" HDTV in there as well with DirectTV programming (basic channels of course), and many other great things about working at Target. My opinion is this. If you have to work retail... work at Target. Yes, they have their bumps along the way... ALL COMPANIES DO! But Target does the best job of retail companies of taking care of their employees (from my personal experience so far). Don't even get me started about the possibility of working at Wally World. No Way. I will not work there while they treat their employees and their customers like they do. If you need an explanation, PM me. What bothers me about people who complain on the internet about working at a job, is they usually have very little experience in the job world and are only out for the quick and easy way to make their life better. If they took the time to realize that companies are in business to make money and there are corporate policies that do help the employee have a pleasant work environment while completing their assigned tasks and there will always be bad eggs here and there at any job, etc, etc... they would realize the complaints they are ranting about aren't that bad to begin with and a little work and understanding on their part will go a long way to resolving the situation. As far as being terminated for making public remarks about corporate confidential information, yeah I can see that as grounds for termination. But, IF and I mean IF the thread originator was terminated without a warning, then there should have been a full blown HR meeting with the employee regarding the termination and a full explanation with examples of the violations to corporate policy to validate the claims. If there was no explanation and/or no verbal or written warnings, then I can see there MIGHT be cause for wrongful termination and a lawyer may be needed. There are a crap-ton of legal rules (even in Texas, an "employment at will" state where you can be terminated without cause) that have to be followed by corporations to ensure they follow the proper procedure. And the problem is, that when a person is terminated, they (the employee) are usually very emotional about it (even if they don't outwardly show it) and often forget many of the proper procedures were indeed followed. So my advice to the person who was terminated, if you feel it was unfair, ask Target for a written document explaining the termination and then if you still feel wronged, show it to a trusted family member or educated friend and they should be able to help guide you if a lawyer may be necessary. If not, it's time to move on and use this experience to help you perform better at your next job. Good Luck. I hope all turns out well. Glad you LOVE your job. GOOD FOR YOU!!!!! I personally, am a LITTLE more ambitious than making minimum wage. That and the constant threat that I would be fired or my hours cut if I didnt work hard/fast enough. (fyi, Ive gotten above standard reviews at just about every job Ive worked at) I remember one poor coworker soaked in his own sweat stocking shelves.....running all over the store with a pallet jack. One guy who I thought was an amazingly HARD worker came up to me discouraged because he was just told that if he didnt work faster, he would be reduced from 32 down to 8 hours a week. I remember my first day, a long timer at Target telling me that I shouldnt talk to anyone....just keep my head down and work fast because, "They're watching you and will cut your hours". I was like, WTF? Is everybody paranoid? Ha! Of all the 12 people I trained with, I was the second to the last to leave 6 weeks later. Ha! That place is a joke. I only took the job out of desperation back in 2008 when the economy was bad and I was in my senior year of college. If Target, Walmart, etc....truly valued their employees they would invest in them. Instead, they burn them and turn them all the while paying as little as possible. We were constantly reminded that we were replaceable....and I have no loyalty to a company with a philosophy like that. Anyway, again....Im glad you love your job and enjoy what you do! Enjoy your free cookies and flat screen TV in the break room....we had those too but ours was a tube (maybe I woulda stayed if it was flat? NAH! Ha)....but in the long run, I decided I needed job security, decent benefits, a wage where I could actually pay my rent. When I want cookies, I just go buy them now. HA! Yeah I have interviewed for target before and not saying there is anything wrong with it but I always thought those jobs were for people like students, elderly, and people that needed something till they found something better. Not a full blown career unless you were management or something. Working forever as one of those stock dudes or cashiers wouldnt really cut it for me either exspecially when the government is willing to give those that qualify money to go back to school and better yourself and not only that but if you actually apply yourself in school you may have a chance to go to college.

The biggest problem is that younger people (16-early 20s) don't understand the politics of ANY work environment and when something goes wrong, THEY COMPLAIN. If you have an issue, find someone at a higher level than you and ASK them what they think of the situation and what you should do. If they tell you to be quiet and move along, you have found a bad egg and need to speak with someone else. If they take your words to heart and offer advice or an explanation, TAKE THEIR WORDS TO HEART even if the answer/advice is not what you want to hear. Experience is king. I am not saying I know everything, I am simply offering assistance in this thread to help out. You don't have to take my advice if you don't want to. I'll be fine if you don't. (after re-reading, that sounds snide. Sorry, didn't mean it that way). Now, to address your minimum wage point. Yes, Target doesn't pay much to start. That's true. But in my case, that's ok because it's my 2ND JOB. I work 40+ hours a week Monday through Fri at a good paying job. I work at Target on the weekends to help pay the bills while my wife stays at home raising my younger kids. We all have our reasons why we work at the places we do. It sounds like your experience at Target motivated you to work at a place where pay is better and is not in the retail world (just a guess on that 2nd part). I hope things turned out well. You can make decent money without a college degree. Ask me, I don't have a degree and I'm doing fine.

I do not aspire to become an ETL(Executive Team Leader) of any kind. I do not want to get rotated around the country like I am still in the military. Keep in mind that a TL(Team Leader) can stay at the same store and make decent pay. For this to happen, one must weather several storms and look the other way while upper management breaks rules and even the law(this includes civil laws involving adultery.) Fornication among management is common. It is a lot of "hear no evil and see no evil." |

Target STLs(Store Team Leader) must relocate anywhere Target wants them. They are rotated. I believe two years is the maximum that an STL can remain at a store.

Fornication among management is common. It is a lot of "hear no evil and see no evil." I don't know how Target works specifically, but I was a DSD vendor (with Pepsi Bottling) and worked a Super Target for several months, after our regular DSD vendor for that store got hurt. (FYI, basically a DSD vendor works for a company, in my case Pepsi, and we ordered our own product, we deliver our own product and stocked our own shelves in the store instead of store employees. Most soft drink, beer, and snack/chip companies are DSD vendors.) In my experience with them, Target is a stickler for the rules and isn't afraid to fire the employees for breaking them, or kicking a vendor out. If you know any employee is breaking the law, and adultery isn't the example you should have used, because it can hardly ever be proven and most people don't even care outside of gossiping, it's your responsibility to report it to the police or at the very least to a district or regional manager. Everybody has a boss. |

Whistle blowers are subject to retaliation. I am just trying to make a living and support my family. I am not interested in crusading at a stupid retail store. It is not the military. Ignoring the disgusting drama will not result in any loss of life or defeat in war. I am beyond caring about what happens anymore.

You are right. This thread is out of hand. It is partially my fault. I am sorry for bringing my rants here.
