Ok so i just had a unique conversation with a shop owner.
I took my grandpas old taurus 357 to get a profesional cleaning. he passed about 12 yrs ago (lived in michigan), the gun was handed down to my father who has an arsenal so he let me have it (we live in california). no paperwork was done on either transfer and i thougt there was no need since it was in family. maybe im wrong on this. in any case he ran the serial number through taurus website. apparently there site lets you run there serial numbers and it will give you the history of the gun. I do not know how old this gun is. it was made in florida which means its not THAT old. in any case the serial number came back as not existed. I think that means the gun is too old to be in htere registery but in case im wrong what does this mean for me? Is this a big problem?

i wonder if it could be as simple as my grandpa when he got this gun never bothered to register it with taurus. he had to have gotten this before the age of the internet.
also I do have a handgun permit thingie so I can legaly own handguns in california.
