Had an A/C guy just leave. He said the compressor is shot. To replace the entire unit will run about $4000.
Fuck me. |

That makes no sense at all. I have a 3200 sq ft house with top of the line AC hooked to my central air and the compressor itself was like $900 and the guy who brazed it, charged it, wired it, etc., charged me $350. Now I know Im in Maine and auto shops around here only charge $35 an hour, but $4K sounds way out of the ball park for an average house sized compressor and labor associated with it. Buy a couple of those huge window units for $400 each and youre all set.

It's an A/C and heat pump. I thought about window units, but I'd still need a way to heat the house during the winter. |

my a/c was going out last year, but made it until winter. then last winter my heat pump/furnace went out on a week when it was 5degrees...had no choice but to replace it then.... worst part, when it went out my a/c unit went with it...had to replace both. my house is only 12 years old, and we are not planning on moving, so we bought a nice unit with an air purifier...$8500 bones later...im sitting in my 72 degree house while its 105 outside

Still man, I put in a brand new, top of the line central heat & air furnace and compressor a few years ago and the TOTAL cost for the units were just under $2K. $4K sounds like a LOT of money. You better get a few estimates before going with someone. In the meantime, pick up a single window unit and some fans.

We've closed off the entire house and have taken to living in the living room. We're running fans and a friend of my wife had an older window unit she's letting us borrow, but it's not making much difference. It blows cooler air, but the house is still over 80 degrees. |

Yeah, that sucks. Not sure if you can, but put the windows down at night with fans in them. It helps big time. Good luck!

Well, we had another company come out this morning and offered us a used unit for as much as the second guy was offering for a new one. We had called him on Friday, and he called us back this morning around 7am got here about 8am.
After talking it over with my wife, and we decided we'd go with the first company. Simply because other than offering us a quality, new, name brand unit, and years of free service, they are a Christ driven company. I know for some God isn't a popular subject here, and in some instances can lead to warnings, topic deletions, and the like, but the owner and the young man who came out are good, religious people. After talking to the lady who told us about them, we found out they've put complete units in houses for people in need free of charge through their church. She had said they even had came out and fixed hers for free. And they didn't charge for the consultation. The others that came were $75 and $50 respectively. Where some places are price gouging because of the heat wave, these guys are working to help people. You don't find many like that anymore. So anyway I called them and said they were who we'd like to go with, and they pulled in the driveway about 10am. They're putting it in now. |

I feel your pain. Our AC went out last weekend and we were freaked that we might not get it repaired before the holiday.
Luckily we have a home service that charges us only $60 for a visit. I totally expected this thread to be filled with lovely ladies trying to stay cool. You're slipping Corn Dog. It must be the heat.
