TOY CITY!!!!!!!!
when i first clicked on this thread i was like "i bet nobody ever heard of it..." that place was AWESOME!!!!!! so many of my early childhood toys came from that place! He-Man, Transformers, Tyco RC cars, and a gigantic section of JOES! i loved that place so much! the one i went to was in garden grove, CA on the corner of westminister and brookhurst, next to national lumber. it closed down about 1989, and i was forced to go to TRU, PlayCo and target instead. i was so devastated when i saw toy city was closed. easily my favorite toy store ever. and yeah i think there was a bear that somewhat resembled a dead-bear? from the greatful dead? hahaha FOUND A PIC!!! ohhhh man the memories!

Places I shopped as a kid for toys: Hills (b-grade K-Mart) Roses (b-grade Wal-Mart) BEST (more of a big electronics department store, can't find any info on them today... maybe they became Best Buy?) KB Toys Toys R Us (sadly, we didn't get one of these in town until '90 or so, which always killed me because we got their commercials and they drove me crazy with all the toys I wanted!) Tons of Toys (This place went out of business upon just *hearing* about TRU opening up in town! Still, was a very cool place and I still remember their Christmas commercials and Jack in the box logo. I think they're still out there in the northeast in a very small capacity) Peoples Drug (kind of a Walgreens/CVS type store, it was downtown and was a two-story store... also got turned onto comics there because they sold a lot of DC Comics 3-packs, CVS ended up buying the whole company years later) Last edited by Metal Misfit; 11-28-2007 at 05:22 PM.. |

I remember going to Toys r us and Holiday and seeing 16 feet worth of G.I. JOE with all the pegs just crammed full. It would take 25 minutes just to look through them all. Now you go into Target and Walmart and find that they have cut form 4 lousy pegs to 2, and of course there empty. It's depressing..... really depressing.

Ah...the good ol' days. I remember TRU aisles like that. Entire aisles and endcaps devoted to SW/GIJoe/TFs.
There were three shopping centers clustered on different corners of an old clover-leaf intersection; between them, there was a TRU, K-Mart, Target and a Service Merhcandise. I have very distinct memories of buying specific toys at all of those places. Then there was the mall...back when all the major department stores had toy sections and there were more standalone toy stores than just KB. I don't remember what they were called, but distinctly remember there being two others at some point...one of which is where I saw the Flagg for the first time. My parents typically left me to hang out in the dept. store toy sections while they went and looked at boring grown-up stuff. This facilitated the onset of childhood kleptomania, but I digress. Then there was..everywhere else. All those random places that carried plenty of good toys that don't now, if they even still exist. Grocery stores, drug stores, dime stores. There was a shopping center that had a Winn's and a Revco and then this hole in the wall dime store run by an Asian couple that was that mythical place that had original Japanese and KO versions alongside early G1 TFs. There was also an Edison's and a Mervyn's in the complex with the TRU from above. I remember them having toy sections, but nothing too specific. I have ZERO memory of WM as a kid. Not around here, not back then. There may have been one or two in other parts of town, but they weren't convenient and so we never went. I honestly can't remember even being in one at all until they opened one in SW Austin and that was when I was in HS. Truly the good ol' days. |
