i have to admit, i rarely go to movies anymore. mainly cuz i am a cheap ass, but mainly, lack of time. i think the movie "Idiocracy" by mike judge, is very prophetic. i fear our our soceity is fullfilling that destiny, if it's not a smoldering cinder by then. i mean come-on, a talking chiauaau? movie, shakes head.
however, i did see an awesome movie on show-time the other night that i never heard of, "He Was A Quiet Guy", with christian slater. i highly recommend it, if you can find it. it's office space, with some wickedness. i can see why movies that make you think aren't popular, they make you think. |

Both are excellent films, yet hardly received any attention or praise from film critics. Did anyone here even see these great American films in theaters? "American Carol" was removed from theaters after 14 days, and I never had the chance to see it. |

Idiocracy is an underrated movie. It's still not all that good, and certainly not Mike Judge's best effort, but it has enough classically funny moments and concepts that make it worth seeing.

Why is the world the way it is?
So I finally get my dad to want to go to a movie, Flash of Genius, and it's no longer in the theaters. WTF! It's only been out for 3 weeks. We had planed on going to see it as a father son thing, and that is almost impossible to do. The movie is about the little guy getting jacked by the big guy and fighting back, most people like that stuff don't they? I saw that Beverly Hills Chihuahua is the #1 movie as of today. I'm sorry, but that is some mindless crap that will not enhance your intelligence, it may make you dumber. I don't know about you guys and I might be the only one on here that thinks this way, but why is it any decent film makes no money, and the retarded ones last forever? Death Race would be another, I found it alright, but was extremely a waste of my $10 to see it in the theater, yet it's still in theaters... It takes me a lot of convincing to get my dad out to the movies as he is getting up there in age and only likes to see movies that most guys in there late 60's would like, I'm 27. We have 4 things we agree on, religion, car's, history, and baseball. Anyone else have the same rant.... So the solution is simple, stop seeing crappy films and you wont support those genre's. Do your part before you preach to others. Last edited by Rocky; 11-01-2008 at 01:56 PM.. |

I know exactly what you mean, and i suspect there are a lot of GOOD screenplays that don't get made, rather than bad ones, because they are don't have a mass market appeal.
I think part of it goes with the times. When world events are generally bad like they are now, people want to laugh and forget and not think about more problems. The other factor i suspect is that thoughtful people are a minority. Call that opinion what you may, but historically it has always stood true that there are more uneducated, simple people than intellectual "elite". People who put up money to create a Hollywood type of film are looking for a return on their investment, and when it comes to "selling" it then you want the masses as your customers. The good films are usually little independent ones that you have to hunt down in the video store or smaller theatres. |

The reason why a movie like the Beverly Hills Chihuahua is number 1 at the Box Office is really because, ironically people like you! I don't mean that as an insult in any form but more of a matter of fact. You see you waited 3 weeks to see a movie you believe to be a quality film, why? Then you admit to seeing less thought provoking cinema as Babylon and not to mention Death Race. I mean really, Death Race? What did you think you were going to get from that film? You even went as far as to call it Retarded and then you wonder. The answer to your question lies within you. You are the typical movie goer that breeds these movies, their sequels, knock-offs and Genre's. For a parent to take a child to see a movie about talking dogs is no less silly or insulting to the box office rules then a grown-up going to see a movie called Death Race.
So the solution is simple, stop seeing crappy films and you wont support those genre's. Do your part before you preach to others.
