Why is the world the way it is?
So I finally get my dad to want to go to a movie, Flash of Genius, and it's no longer in the theaters. WTF! It's only been out for 3 weeks. We had planed on going to see it as a father son thing, and that is almost impossible to do. The movie is about the little guy getting jacked by the big guy and fighting back, most people like that stuff don't they? I saw that Beverly Hills Chihuahua is the #1 movie as of today. I'm sorry, but that is some mindless crap that will not enhance your intelligence, it may make you dumber. I don't know about you guys and I might be the only one on here that thinks this way, but why is it any decent film makes no money, and the retarded ones last forever? Death Race would be another, I found it alright, but was extremely a waste of my $10 to see it in the theater, yet it's still in theaters... It takes me a lot of convincing to get my dad out to the movies as he is getting up there in age and only likes to see movies that most guys in there late 60's would like, I'm 27. We have 4 things we agree on, religion, car's, history, and baseball. Anyone else have the same rant.... I wouldn't equate the situation to your desire for it to be a father/son "thing". I would equate it to the fact that it didn't make money. I never go to the movies. I HATE going to the movies; not because they cost so much and because if I don't really care about the movie I fall asleep. That's not a comment on the "hollywood" elite, like Ronald Reagan, it's more a commentary on the idea that main street, wall street and rodeo drive are all the same. They operate on similar principles, wheter we like it or not. If Star Wars wasn't making money, it would have been pulled right after the second screening. If Beverly Hill Chiaiuahuahasua, or however it's spelled weren't making money, it would have been pulled. I agree with you 100%, Beverly Hills Chiuahauuhauaha should have been pulled; it's likely shit. But I also think that Religulous should have had a wider release. Here, in San Francisco, (where we rape children, allow gay marriage, don't beat women, think Mr. Clinton's indiscretions are a non-issue) the movie was easier to find. But it took some effort to find it for a reasonable price. It also took a measure of effort for my friends in my home town, to find it. I respect your notion that this movie might have brought you closer to your father, but not if it comes at the expense of understanding that main street would operate in exactly the sae way. |

Skyhawk, Hollywood is run by big money starring plastic people... what did you expect? I do feel your pain though, great movies are usually ignored by the people who push the advertising, and hence ignored by the public. The commercial crap is pushed heavily and so the masses go see it.
Devil King, I disagree... Religulous shouldn't have gotten a wider release.. Bill Mahar is an idiot who interviewed a bunch of other idiots to try and make a point. Problem is, it's hard to make a point if you don't address the issue squarely. It's like saying rock music sucks because you listened to a Good Charlotte album.

this is all the reasons why I stay away from the movies, 98% are just crap! in the last 5 years I've been to 4 movies. the movies today are all the same story lines and I'm seeing alot of "remakes" of old classic movies wich always turn out to be crap remakes.

wow! I didnt think it would be this hot of a topic.... lol.. I was just wanting to rant/vent at the fact that dad and I had been talking about going to see it for the last couple months and we finally get the time, and it's replaced by a freak'n talking dog movie!
On another note.... I do understand Hollywood. It just like any big business such as auto makers, oil companies, banks.... yata yata... They want money. I guess I'm just old school in my way of thinking... I'll admit, I went and saw a "mindless" movie today, mind you it was with out my popp's.... Babylon AD, I got a kick out of it but by no means good. It cost me $3 bucks... I had fun, but I would rather have seen the one I wanted.... 3 FREAK'N WEEKS!!!!! COM"MON!!!!!!!!!!! I havent had time to get the tabs for my car yet and they were up 2 weeks ago!!!! Pissed off the DMV is not open Sundays!

It still comes down to personal taste, whether you like to admit it or not. I think High School Musical is one of the dumbest things ever but it appeals to the teen age gap so of course it's going to be incredibly popular. I hated Titanic with a passion yet look how long that lasted and how many awards it won. It wasn't a good movie in my eyes but in a huge majority of people's minds, it was one of the best movies ever made.
I often fight about the best Bond movies and the best Bond. My favourites are Dr. No, Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever and From Russia, With Love. A number of people I speak to like Roger Moore and his movies better and some like Pierce Brosnan and his movies better. A lot of them don't really like the really classic Bond movies. I also happen to think Daniel Craig is a fantastic Bond. A lot of people disagree. A lot of things might seem dumb to us (I know I personally think a hell of a lot of movies are stupid these days) but there are a lot of people as well who share a common interest. Most of the movies that stay in theatres forever are movies that are geared towards kids. You know when a Disney movie comes out, the damn thing will last forever.

It's a lot easier to make a movie for kids. They'll watch anything with "cute" animals and singing and things like that in it. Kids are fairly easy to please.
