You might want to cash it out and use it. The buying power of the dollar slips a little lower every day.

Do a search on the value of the USD in 1995 and whatever the value was then compared to now you can see how much money you lost. $50 today does not buy as much as $50 in 1995.

It doesn't work like that. If it was bought in 1995 it was purchased for $25.00 and 7 years later it was worth $50. So 2002 it had a value of $50...it keeps accumulating interest and increasing in value over time. It is likely worth closer to $100 now.
You can take it to any bank and cash it if you want....

Not sure about US savings bonds, but Cdn savings bonds are worthless. Inflation, and taxation once you cash it in now, will have killed your return. Just cash it and buy a couple Joes. Or go out for a dinner.

My wife cashed in a shit-load when she graduated college. WORST thing EVER!!!! Not only were the $100 dollar ones from 20 years ago only worth like $102, she cashed a total of like $4K worth and when it came to income tax, her normal $800 dollar refund turned into owing $1400!!!!! Her family started buying our son bonds when he was born and I put a stop to that in a hurry. They are bullshit man. A loan on fake money is all. Theyve royally screwed up inflation, but I wont get into it anymore because it will turn political fast! Bonds piss me off.
Cash the $52 bucks and claim it on your taxes. Thats all you can do. |
