Well its been pretty enjoyable and exciting playoffs this year even though some of our teams have lost or even failed to make it to the post season (Yea Wild!). Other than the 3 first round sweeps, the rest have turned into longer hard fought battles with 5 game 7's so far. Business for the NHL should be good.
Popular wisdom has the Wings and Pens going to the Stanley Cup with 6 or 7 games continuing to be the norm. I see the possibility of things being over relatively quickly with certain teams having the "On a mission" mind set. This definitely feels like its the case with the Penguins. I see the Pens taking this series in 5 games as their momentum builds. If the Canes have any chance, Cam Ward will have to have some sort of radioactive accident and use his new super powers to steal another series in game 7. My pick: Pittsburgh (Sorry Canes fans, but this one is pretty obvious.) A little rest in the playoffs is OK, but if you're winning, you want to keep on rolling and get back to playing. I don't think rest will be a big factor between the Hawks and Wings (initially anyway). The first couple of games will be very telling who came into this series with the right mindset and is ready to really hunker down with the finish line getting ever closer. If the wings experience is much of an edge I think they will come in and get thing done rather quickly wrapping thing up in 5 close games. If the Hawks' youth and fresher legs are going to give them the jump early and they continue to roll, I think it will take them 6 games to take down the red giant. Either way I don't see a game 7 in this series either. My pick: I'm going to go against the experts and pick Chicago. Both teams have deep, talented teams that can roll 4 lines. Both teams have quality coaching. Chicago has played 12 games and Detroit 11. Youth verses experience?...I don't know. The "X" factor for me is the goalies. Osgood has better stats so far, but I think that has more to do with playing Columbus in the first round. I'm putting my money on Khabibulin. There you go, whether you care or not. I'll enjoy seeing if my guesswork is close or a pile of rubbish. What say you?! |

Touche!
As for conference pics - unless Lightening strikes for a THIRD time its Pits in the east (mind you, it would be kinda funny if it did happen again....) West I give about a 50:50. As Carstein said, it will come down in a big way to the goalies. But also, I think puck possession will play a big role and which team keeps it longer will probably be a VERY big factor. That said, I also have to say the hawks have a (very tiny) edge because they're younger. If it was even 2 years ago, I'd say Detroit in a heartbeat, but their veterans, no matter HOW good they are, are getting up there. |

Definitely, puck possession will be huge. I'm pretty excited to see how this series will turn out. No matter what, I don't see either team declining at all in the next couple of years so hopefully this is just the start of some very entertaining years for fans of both teams. |
