do you have a story about their music sucking your ass? Was it so painful that you don't want to go there? sorry, had to. anyway, the Stooges may not be "all that" but last time i heard they were in fact All that, a bag of chips and two twinkies. and an awesomely great rock and roll band.

Again....... The first wave of punk rock aimed to be aggressively modern, distancing itself from the bombast and sentimentality of early 1970s rock.[2] According to Ramones drummer Tommy Ramone, "In its initial form, a lot of [1960s] stuff was innovative and exciting. Unfortunately, what happens is that people who could not hold a candle to the likes of Hendrix started noodling away. Soon you had endless solos that went nowhere. By 1973, I knew that what was needed was some pure, stripped down, no bullshit rock 'n' roll."[3] John Holmstrom, founding editor of Punk magazine, recalls feeling "punk rock had to come along because the rock scene had become so tame that [acts] like Billy Joel and Simon and Garfunkel were being called rock and roll, when to me and other fans, rock and roll meant this wild and rebellious music."[4] In critic Robert Christgau's description, "It was also a subculture that scornfully rejected the political idealism and Californian flower-power silliness of hippie myth."[5] Patti Smith, in contrast, suggests in the documentary 25 Years of Punk that the hippies and the punk rockers were linked by a common anti-establishment mentality. So shoot me down...............Because i like the Stoogies, Sex pistols, Ramones, Patti...........Black Flagg, but I also like The Stones.....Beatles.....Floyd.......Zep........CSNY .......... If it werent for the Beatles...you wouldnt be listening to a damn thing you do today........because record producers would still be writing the bands music and lyrics........Which is also funny because for a band you hate they sure lived a punk life style long before it was ever cool to say so.......... |

I'm going to try to redirect some issues from another thread:
http://www.hisstank.com/forum/genera...ou-dont-6.html To briefly recap, some sparks flew when someone said we needed to start drilling on American soil, while saying that Global Warming is a myth, along with some other things. I do not label myself an environmentalist. The biggest thing I do is pick up other people's litter. But it's something. I'm starting to recycle. If everyone would pitch in and do a little, we can all make this a better (and cleaner) place to live. The human race's dependency on oil is not destroying the planet, because the planet will long outlive the human race, but it's killing US. We're fighting wars for this shit, man! I've said it before, and I'll say it again - the internal combustion engine is primitive. There are newer resources that are cleaner, cheaper and more abundant in the works. There are garbage disposal units in development that use fusion to completely destroy any and all garbage, while making surplus electricity. There are plenty of viable alternative sources of electricity that do work - yes, wind works and delivers an abundance of energy, when the turbines are designed efficiently, and the ocean is being looked to next for what is possibly the largest source of untapped energy on our planet. All the while, looking at the financial crisis our economy is going through, where our dependency on oil is at least partly to blame (humanity's greed for power and wealth is the larger demon to slay there), in addition to more and more medical evidence piling up that all oil-based products are the source of most cancers, and we need to find another way. Yes, the state of Montana sits on top of the known largest shale oil deposit in the world. But so what? The demand is well beyond the grasp of manufacturers to supply. It's not the answer. Time to look for another solution. Preservation of this planet, the way it is, is necessary for the human race to have a future. We're continually encroaching, spreading out further and farther from already overcrowded (not to mention drug-addled and crime-ridden) cities. The part in the first Matrix where Agent Smith alludes us to a virus is bang-on. And closed-mindedness will not make this any better of a place to live - for me or my daughter, or any of her offspring. It reminds me of the argument smokers constantly make. Now, I used to be a smoker myself. I smoked for around 8-10 years. I quit 3 years ago. But with all of the smoking bans (which I applaud), the only argument they have is, "It's my right to smoke where I want." True. It is your right. I spent 8 years in the Army ensuring you have that right to throw your money away and blacken your lungs. But it's also MY right and the right of everyone else who DOESN'T want to smoke to NOT have to be a part of that. Then they retort, "Well then leave." Well, no. That doesn't give us the right to be where we want to be breathing clean air. If you're the one who wants to smoke, then you need to be responsible enough to go somewhere where it won't bother anyone. I always kept that in mind when I smoked. So the argument goes, that there the scientific proof that what we're doing to the planet is made up by the media, which is a bit naive, not to mention paranoid. I'm as distrustful of the media as anyone - that's why I read scientific journals. But wait, if they're in on it also, then who are you going to believe? Global Warming isn't really caused by us. There's plenty of evidence that the planet goes through a cycle of heating up and cooling down. And while there are a lot of steps we can (and should) take to make this world a better place, just because of decent, human responsibility, there are those of us (who at times seem to be the majority) that can't look past their own interests. Well, it's your right, isn't it? Wrong. Is it your right to drive a car? No. It's a privilege. To continue to do so, you need to do so responsibly. Obey the posted speed limits, know all of the traffic laws, and get off the phone and pay attention to your surroundings. Is it your right to have children? It shouldn't be - not without first proving that you're a suitable parent, and can care and provide for those children. But then you get into a whole other debate over 'who decides what's fit or unfit', and I'm not getting into that. Let's just say - not any church. Americans have an unbelievable sense of entitlement, and it's spreading far and wide throughout other countries as well. (And before you label me as anti-American, remember I served this country for 8 years.) We all need to step back and re-evaluate the lives we're living. Because it's all our world, and the things we do here affect all of us. |

I do like a lot of "hippie" music, like Neil Young, but as far as people, I thought the whole notion of beatnik, hippie, bohemian whatever is just too flakey. And while I like the Beatles, they're waaaay overrated. They were influenced by Bob Dylan (another artist I don't really "get" - good song writer, terrible singer) and Buddy Holly (awesome!) who wrote all their own music. So to say we'd still be listening to producer-written music (?) isn't true. Artists were writing their own music way before then - Glen Miller, Leadbelly, Bill Haley, and on and on, the whole way back to Debussey and Mozart. Great post Minstrelboy!
You guys want to see an exercise in horror, watch the movie: 'Jesus Camp'. It takes on some of these issues... in a very disturbing way. |
