I lost my job back in September; this was no surprise, as I was working as a civilian contractor in Iraq, and as it became apparent that our troops were going to be returning by years end I braced for the inevitable. I've applied to about a bazillion jobs since I've gotten back, but haven't done too well in procuring any prospective leads to getting off of unemployment, which will probably run out soon.
At any rate, I was wondering if anyone might have some pull or suggestions or words of encouragement. I'm an Army vet of 6 years, have over 10 years experience as a diesel mechanic, mostly military equipment. No certifications aside from my Army transcripts. I also have an Associate's Degree in Computer Science for mechanical drafting, which I worked at for two years detailing structural improvements for existing bridges using AutoCAD '09. I'm a reliable, dependable and well-organized individual that continually strives to do my personal best regardless of the task. I do not have a CDL, but I have plenty of experience driving all sorts of large equipment, from tow trucks and cranes to forklifts of various sizes and makes. I've been applying to all sorts of maintenance related positions that my background would be suited to, including a lot of the Marcellus Shale Coalition companies. If anybody owns a business, works somewhere that's hiring or knows someone or someplace in need of quality employees, do not hesitate to point me in their direction. My location is Midway, PA (near the Pittsburgh airport), and I'd like to find something within 25 miles driving distance (preferably), but am not adverse to moving if the wage is right. I've applied all over the country, but again, have not had any luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dude -
First stop www.scsc.state.pa.us Second Stop - With your background you need to check out all the Natural Gas Drilling companies that are coming to PA because of the Marcellus Shale - Chesapeake , Shell, Southwest, and there are tons of local places hiring because they are all subbing for bigger groups. Also - with your background try heavy equipment dealers and rental places. Caterpillar / John Deere and the like. |

Thanks; didn't know about that SCSC site. I'd been going through PA Careerlinks, which is where I've gotten the most attention. I've applied to a bunch of the Marcellus Shale Coalition companies - there are three sites that are being drilled within 5 miles of the house. But no feedback yet. Still holding out hope that someone scoops me up.
I just wonder if I'm going at this the right way. I feel as if maybe there's something on my resume that automatically disqualifies me in an employers eyes. I interview okay, but once I get hired and settle in to the job, my supervisors have only had very complimentary things to say about me.

Try this:
Norfolk Southern My cousin works for the BNSF and was making serious money working on the engines, all he had was 4 years of working on Army engines. Good luck. |

thats the only real suggestion I have.

Thanks guys. Still looking; had an interview on Wednesday and got a call from Waste Management today, so something might pan out.

I accepted a job offer today to work at a construction rental and sales shop. They've been in the area for around 60 years, and everyone there seems nice. It's about 10 miles from the house, all back roads and takes about 20 minutes to get there - so no traffic which is exciting. It also starts at 7am and ends at 3pm, which is also exciting. It's a Union shop though, and I've had no experience with the Unions before, but it seems to me like it's going to be another bill I don't want. Ah well. I suppose it can't be escaped, no matter how badly I want to clear up all of my debts and monthly bills. Which is why I need a job in the first place. Cursed circular entrapment.
