So I walk into work today to find out that our company is closing down my plant and five others. Normally I throw my work boots and safety gear on and head into our departments office for our routine morning safety meeting. Not today though... We (every employee) get ushered off to our conference room to be greeted by one of our company's top dawgs. There, with a scripted somber look, he gives us the news.
Out of the 529 employees affected by this there are only about 55 job openings elsewhere for us to transfer to. Anyone 55 and older can choose to voluntarily separate from the company, keeping what ever percentage of their retirement that is owed to them. So that cuts the number of employees left to around 375. So basically, there's a 1 in 7 chance that I will have a job after September. I've been working here for about 5 years now, it's a union job. Before that I worked as a salary retail manager. I don't ever want to go back to that (no offense to those that work in that line). It's just not for me, plus being a retail manager doesn't really work for a father of 3 young kids. Anyhow, I just wanted to get it out. I don't really have a lot of people to talk about this with. My wife is upset, so she isn't really in the "supportive" mode right now. Thanks for listening... Jeremiah Here's the press release, 15 minutes after our meeting ended. Quote:
Today, the company announced that, as a result of new federal environmental rules on mercury and other air emissions, we will retire six older, unscrubbed coal-fired power plants.
With a generating capacity of 2,689 megawatts (MW), the following plants will be retired by Sept.1, 2012: • Ohio: Eastlake 1-5, Ashtabula, Lake Shore and Bay Shore 2-4* • Pennsylvania: Armstrong • Maryland: R. Paul Smith “This decision in no way reflects the fine work of our employees at the affected plants, but rather the impact of new environmental rules on our operations,” said Jim Lash, president, FirstEnergy Generation and Chief Nuclear Officer. There are 529 employees directly affected by the announcement, with about one-third of those eligible for retirement. Efforts will be made to provide opportunities to as many employees as possible at other FirstEnergy facilities and work locations, and applicable severance benefits will be available to those who are eligible.

I'm surprised they're closing the plants and not updating them to the new standards.
There are tax incentives and other things that make upgrading cheaper.

Yeah it is a power plant, sorry I had to go do a job real quick.
They don't want to invest to upgrade, it's not worth it to them.

It's very burdensome on companies to have to comply with what the union feels employees should be paid ON TOP of what they want for benny packages ON TOP of this absurd government regulation. And we wonder why we are heading in the direction we are??? Sorry to hear about your situation man. It sucks, but thank the union in conjunction with the government.
