I live in rural PA, and in the middle of the night if I'm out walking my dog, you can hear the coyotes howling up on the hillside behind my house , sounds something between a baby crying and a wolf howl. Damn near one of the most horrible sounds I've ever experienced in nature. Giving me the shivers just thinking about it. We used to hunt them when I was a kid - spotlight the edge of a field and when you saw yellow eyes you shot. I guess the really freaky part is that people who have seen them attacking or running through the woods by their houses say that the way their maw is shaped it looks like they are laughing or sneering at you. |

As one who used to be an AVID coyote hunter, I will say this: They are FAR bigger and FAR more dangerous than most people realize.
Sure, most of the time theyre only about 40lbs, but 75lbs is NOT uncommon. Maine used to have a bounty on them, and we hunted them hard. A female over 50lbs or a male over 75lbs was a reward. We had NO problem collecting on those rewards regularly, and basically made it into a part-time job. In fact, so many people did that the state stopped it because it was costing them too much money. I know a number of people who have been stalked by coyotes, and they are the real deal. Alone, a coyote isnt really much to worry about. In a pack, there isnt much thats scarier. ESPECIALLY "urbanized" coyotes. The ones out in the woods that never see people, no problem. The ones that live around people are SCARY dangerous. |

We have them near where I live, I'm told that if they are alone it not a big deal as they avoid humans. In packs thats another story.
They are night animals so as long as you keep pets in at night you should be fine. |
