so i have been thinking about this topic for a while now and what ever happened to good bands? i know everyone has there own opinion on what they call "good" but for me i grew up listening to a lot of grunge bands and heavy metal bands like... nirvana, deftones, tool, alice in chains, metallica, pantera, bands that just dominated the music industry because they were so talented and awsome.
now we have all this new emo crap and just horrible bands that just blow ass, i just dont feel it and cant even get into it. i havnt baught a "newer" cd in a long time just for the fact that everything out there sounds the same. i hear people say oh mudvayne and slipknot are awsome and for me they are alright but i wouldnt go out and buy there cd because truthfully there not that great. i think that bands are to afraid to be original and take chances, they all want to sound like or attempt to sound like something that already exsists or has exsisted. for me i love music and have been really bored and fustrated waiting for something awsome to come out and just dominate. i remeber back when marilyn manson dominated the music scene for awhile because he rocked and just drew you in. i didnt care for what he stood for, but as a musician he was awsome. i miss the good ole days when you had variety in the same kind of genre but yet it was all awsome for the most part. now its just crap and this is my own opinion but its how i feel. what do you guys think? |

For me, good music went out the door when the eighties did.

Most of my favorites went back to being Indy or stayed that way when given the chance to jump to a major label. That way they can do what they want and not have morons like Bob Rock screwing with their shit. In my eyes it's the losers at the Labels trying to dictate to the world what we should hear that cause this garbage.
Oh and for the record the last New CD I bought was Bad Religion: New Maps of Hell (Deluxe Edition). I bought this CD a second time to get the Deluxe Extras because it was that good of an Album. They dictate what they do on a CD because Brett (Lead Guitar) owns Epitaph Records, their label.

Well your not going to find good music in Wal-Mart next to the Toy isle. If you want good stuff you have to look for it.
Judging by your taste you like things more on the heavy side. Try these guys you might like them. They are way better than Pantera I can tell you that. |

For the most part I agree with you, but there are some gems out there. I listen to a wide range of music and recently I can say I endorse the following albums: Young Machetes by the Blood Brothers You're A Woman, I'm a Machine By Death From Above 1979 No Heroes or Jane Doe By Converge....once again blows Pantera and slipknot out of the water Here Come The Waterworks by Big Business if you are still into the grunge stuff, although its not really grunge, the Melvins are still kicking ass....check out their last two albums.

All I have to say is when he got his claws into Metallica it was all down hill. Funny that they get rid of him and the put out their best album in almost 20 years. Now he messes with The Offspring and they put out the worst album in their history. If that's a good producer you can keep it.

This is such a 'subjective' thread.
Music, and what is considered 'good' music, by some is of course, not the same for all. Personally, if I never hear Nirvana, Metallica or Alice in Chains again, I'd be a happy guy. Even bands I absolutely loved, if they still exist to this day, are producing music that is below their standards: The Cure, Depeche Mode, New Order, Smashing Pumpkins, Jane's Addiction (thank god they're dead again) & Bauhaus. And there are those that, IMO, were gone long before their time: Oingo Boingo, Love and Rockets, the Smiths, etc... But there are a few bands, of the same genre that still produce fantastic music (regardless of how infrequent the albums may come): Echo & The Bunnymen, James, Social Distortion... Then there are the classics: The Beatles, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd (RIP Richard Wright), The Doors And the good "new(er)" bands: Coldplay, Band of Horses, the Shins, Interpol, Bloc Party, Kasabian, Keane, Snow Patrol... But, judging by the lists I see here, I'm probably drawing up many blank stares and gay jokes, so I'll move on... Point is good music is out there... it's just maybe not quite your cup of tea. Be subjective! |
