Hey everyone, since I'll be sending in my resume to a few places I'd like to get some tips and help on this. I've never been in an interview before so I have no idea what to expect. I do tend to get tense just going to the doctors office and I do panic a bit under stressful situations. I would like to get an idea of what to expect what kind of questions get asked should I dress in a full button down shirt or is a pullover ok? should I wear a tie? should I bring my resume with me? How do I present myself? should I be laid back or right to the point? do I ask the employer any questions? should I be a little bit humorous at the appropriate time? I appreciate any help and tips on this thanks.

Just try to stay calm and try to appear confident, even if you're nervous as hell. I'm always nervous in situations like that. Make sure you dress snazzy but don't overdue it. For instance, I work in a body shop. When people interview and show up in a suit it throws up a red flag because anyone who has worked in a shop knows better than that. But speaking clearly and appearing confident is key. If you look good and appear confident (not arrogant though) then that will go a very long way. Good luck man. I'm sure you'll nail it.

Dress depends on the job you are applying for. Always dress for the position you want, not the position you are trying for especially for corporate companies. Tip #1 - Don't say you think you can, say I know I can. Be confident and energetic. Most companies are going to teach you their way to do something. Showing confidence and a willingness/ energy to learn is what employers look for. Tip #2 - Don't be the funny guy, it shows you dont respect the position you are apllying for or the person you are interviewing with. Hope that helps.

Sorry Str8cash but you always wear a shirt and tie.
I don't care if your applying at "Boobs R A Jigglin'" you wear a shirt and tie (or at least a collared shirt). It's old fashioned yes, but it is still expected. Here are a few of my go to rules for interviews. 1. Listen to the question and answer honestly 2. Interview for the position that you are there for. Don't try to up sell yourself too much getting in the door. Remember they called you in for a specific position. 3. Be confident with your answers and look the person you're meeting in the eyes. Firm handshake and keep the 'umms and uhhh's' to a minimum. 4. Send a thank you card or email the next day.

They're going to ask you abou previous experience, why you think they should hire you and easy stuff like that. They'll also tell you to name a situation in the past where you turned a bad situation into a good situation. Aswell as strengths and weaknesses. Strengths are easy, but it's hard to come up with a weakness. And this is an important question to answer correctly. They're looking for a flaw and it's important that you don't give them one but you still can't come off as trying to avoid the question. It's called spin. Tell them about a weakness you had in the past but corrected it. Example: "Earlier in my career I was too hands on. I've since learned to deligate responsibility if the task is too big.". Bosses love that shit. Anyway, it's mostly common sense but it can be nerve racking. Either way I'm sure you'll do fine. Just be confident in your own abilities. |

Don't pull your junk out. I can tell you first hand that's a bad move. Also don't keep a pocketful of your old Secret Wars guys with you, another bad move I can tell you about.
Having said all of that this time last year all I was doing was interviews. One job was for a crane operator. I wore a short sleeve button down shirt and jeans. The interview was in a garage. The guy asked me why I wore jeans...no lie. What I learned then and there was to never ever wear jeans again. Dress accordingly, make eye contact when speaking. Posture and handshake go hand in hand with confidence. Believe in yourself and best of luck! |

Button down shirt and tie with a tie clip, pressed slacks, matching belt, socks and polished shoes. You have to look like a million bucks.
Bring a copy of your resume on official letter head. Make sure you know about the company-where they sratred, what they do, and what their future holds for them. Be prepared to ask questions like: Why you think you would be a good candidate for the job What you are bringing to the company Have a one, three, five and ten year plan Know what your weaknesses are-They WILL ask-strong points-possibility but more likely your weaknesses. How have you dealt with conflict in previous jobs Other situations that required you to make a judgement call in your previous jobs IMPORTANT: Salary-your best answer is: "if I am considered for this job/position, I am sure that the offer made will be more than fair" Most important: When they ask you at the end if you have any questions: be sure to ask 3-5 questions based on what you spoke about or ask more information about the job, company or requirements. |
