i have a friend with a Montana also. same money pit as yours. i told him to get a good GMC he did not wanted to copy our family SUV a 2005 GMC Envoy so he went with a Explorer and 4 months later he had problems with the transmission.. then the fuel injector system. not saying the Ford Explorer is a bad SUV but is not the 1st time i hear stuff like that about them.

my car has 105,000 on my 1996 pontiac grand am.befor 100,000 i put a water pump, alternator and 3 steering bushings on it.not bad,the water pump deal was because it is a 2.4 twin cam.i had the car since new so i treated it well.
now past 2 years i put more money into it because of rust and corrosion.since the new catalytic was put on,its run like crap and keeps messing up oxygen sensors.needless to say its not passing inspection come july and it dont even got any holes in the body!!!!!firewall is rotted bad. i'll be starting a similar thread soon, need feedback on subaru used owners.i see honda is probably a no thanks.........

my dad has bought used cars his whole life, with one exception, and his cars have been in the shop with tons of problems the whole time.
i bought my first new truck and drove it 13 years, then got another one and i'm over 120K with nothing but minor maintenance from either. buy new and take care of it. been driving over 22 years with only 8 years of car notes. can't beat it |

Yeah, there is a serious issue with manufacturing when the trany goes over and over and over again.
Hey, as far as the firewall being rotten, how? There isnt any place for standing water to collect? Can you just cut out the bad section and piece in some new? Im telling you, most of the time vehicles are MUCH cheaper to fix than scrap and buy new. Ive been working on vehicles my whole life (grew up in a racing family) and a lot of the times things can be fixed cheaper and easier than swinging a car payment at $200 or more a month for 5 years. Hell, I can build a whole new Jeep from scratch using BRAND NEW parts (frame, body, motor, etc.) for half of what a new one costs. No bull shit. |

yeah, the engine and tranny needs pulled and the suspension re-enforced,intior pulled, plus the rockers are soft, will need replaced.,the floor part of the rockers that is.probably 2 or 3 grand.
now the floors are fine still, just the freakin firewall.i think the firewall metal is cheap as the floorpans and body are zinc coated.

2002 dodge durango, 4x4, v-8. 152k miles on it.
3 month power train warranty came with it has something called tracker on it which helps it if it is ever stolen (all parts are serialized and registered with teh police so if its stolen it helps te cops find it) it did look clean and ran clean. also i lifted the hood and could see the engine with nice gaps so if i do have to work on it it shouldnt suck so bad. wife loves the sound system, has the 3rd seat, cons middle seat for the kids is a little cramped, i would have liked another 12 inches to fit the car seats, only would do a 30 month loan so the payments are slightly more then i really wanted. granted it means its payed off faster but i would rather it had longer with lower payments. so yeah it is doable
