i am still befuddled by their continued existence, especially since the rise of target. i know sears bailed em out a while ago, but still, they're all just so shitty.

I have a vendetta against Kmart.
I used to work there for a long while I could see there were issues, notably the sales blew one week some stuff the next week differant stuff week 3 same stuff from week 1 week 4 week 2's stuff again. And all sale prices at regular prices of most other stores. Next was the store cutting corners while pissing away money on stuff that was just terribly thought out ideas that they just abandoned half way through. For example, if it takes 20 people to properly man a shift Kmart would say...ok budget is tight this month can we all pull together and make it work with just 18? So we would...then because we did they would say...well we did it with 18 how about 16? Eventually it was two cashiers, the service desk, one person in all of hardlines and one in all of softlines and A manager......six people to run what should be run by 20. Then there were things like the Blue Light which when it started was a simple plan...a blue flashing light attached to a car battery to clear out some overstock. When Kmart brought it back they went MENTAL they spent sooooo much money installing this massive light and sound system and a structured list of items that it was to sell...only problem was we never had the merch for it, and couldn't use anything that we had overstock in our store to replace with. AND no one to man the blue light. Now eventually they opened a Walmart across the street from our store which eventually closed. They actually dispersed us to other stores...execept we were treated by the stores staff like our stores were closed because we were at fault. Finally they made a decision to get rid of any employees that made over a certain amount...which seemingly was anthing over $9.50 an hour by saying they were doing a 'Workforce Reduction' which was NOT a lay off, as they would not be bring us back....BUT we could reapply in 30 days but we would be starting over at Minimum Wage. Nice huh? They then promptly bought Sears, and soon after opened their COMPLETE failure of Sears Home Essentials stores which they eventually had to close again. As a customer, I have this to say...theirs stores are dives...dirty poorly staffed, and overall overpriced. Their inventory sits there forever. Its like shopping in a Marshells or TJ Maxx for three times the price. But unlike those stores where I'm willing to put up with merch tossed carelessly on a table rack or shelf because I'm getting it at a great price, Kmart does not compete with that pricing in any way. And honestly those stores usually have more staff than Kmart on any given day. So Kmart can rot in hell for all I care. Honestly I hope they close the thre remaining stores I have in my area and open up ROSS Stores. |

But did you ever spend an entire shift putting up wobblers?
Or spend half of it getting carts because the guy who does it comes in at noon. Or how about how the local stores cant order stuff anymore. My friend was a dept manager and he odered plastic diaper covers every week because a crazy guy would always come buy them all. It was in the top five most sold items in the store. Or the summer when they turned off ever third light in the store during store hours?

I have nothing against K-Mart but I noticed a while back (at least 8-10 years ago) they just quit taking care of things in their stores. The toy sections (my primary haunts) were always a mess, no one ever straightened them up and restocks were a surprize. But it was clear if something got grabbed off the pegs by an excited kid and tossed down by a parent it would sit there until doomsday.
However, there was some advantages, first and foremost there was teh fact that the toy hunters and scalpers rarely bothered, often you could find some things that wouldn't be around anywhere else (at least until they begain dropping lines left and right like MU and Joe). And the clearence section was often a row of interesting with weird and oddball toys that I doubt I would know about now. Still I kind of wish they had pulled themselves up just to have an alternative to Wally Mart which seems to not care anymore anyway (I mean they have wiped out everything else). |
