Good idea, good intentions, piss poor implementation.
Were they within their right to let the house burn? Yes, but they'll be paying many times that in lost public trust. From the way it is being portrayed, it looks akin to extortion... "Hey, you can pay the money, or maybe someone comes and messes up your restaurant. You don't want that to happen, do you?" Law enforcement always finds a way to get funded and there's no separate "Police Tax" that we have to pay. How about they get a clue and collect their $75 that way? We don't have to re-invent the wheel every time, people.

i think i read a similar story last year and the guy had the money right than and there and they still didnt do anything. i understand things get expensive but shit i mean if i was a fireman i would have felt a moral obligation to do something for these people. money does make the world go around but come on...

I found my self at odds with this story as most municipalities fund their fire dept's through some measure of taxation and if it comes out that the fire dept here is a quasi private/public entity, meaning it receives some of its funding through some from of tax in conjunction with the annual fee, then they completely disregarded their sworn duties and need to be held accountable. Oh wait, I am talking about accountability in a country where there is none. Well that being said moving along....nothing to see here.

Edit: I was wrong. It's a different story, but similar to one that happened last year as mentioned in the blog.
Here is the story from last year. Rural Tennessee fire sparks conservative ideological debate | The Upshot - Yahoo! News I think the big problem is that the fee is voluntary instead of mandatory. If the nearby city is the only fire dept. that are in a position to respond to the fires in that rural area, then they should be required to pay a minimum fee to cover the basic fire and police services. What if people that actually live in town could decide to opt out of fire protection? I'm sure some people would opt out, and then would cry about it when they need it. Wait a sec. Something is fishy here. Why is this story being put out again as if it just happened. I knew it sounded familiar. Here is the article that was put out LAST YEAR.
Rural Tennessee fire sparks conservative ideological debate | The Upshot - Yahoo! News I guess when you run out of things to blog about you dig up some story and put it out there as if it's new. The old article has more details that kind of make me have mixed feelings on it. a) before the fee was put in place to cover non-residents of the nearby town, no one in the rural area had fire protection. b) they responded when the neighbor who did pay the fee called because he was afraid his home would catch fire. c)the homeowner offered to pay all fees and costs associated with responding to the fire. I think the big problem is that the fee is voluntary instead of mandatory.
