Most of the time I assume they are apologizing for embarrassing another person for revealing that their opinion on something is dumb or wrong.
For example, if someone comes out and says, "I thought ROC was a good movie." Then another person with sensible taste might say, "I'm sorry but, that movie sucked." They are apologizing for having to embarrass the other person by letting them know that what they consider good is actually a total piece of shit of a movie.

It has been my experience that it is hard for allot of people to say they are sorry after they say or do something shitty, much less beforehand.

I'm sorry but you guys are all ignoring Chapter 23 in Black Llama's book of internet trolling.
The use of "I'm sorry, but" is very similar to the use of "" at the end of a sentence. You can basically say what EVER you want about anyone or anything by putting an "I'm sorry but" in front of it. It's like being black and telling racist jokes, you get a free pass......

Maybe the poster(s) simply doesn't want to come off as shitting all over another's post or sounding like a troll?
God forbid someone try to be courteous, make sure others know they're not trying to be a douche and are just expressing their thoughts. It's the same reason people use "IMO" and all the time. You've never said that in conversation - ever? Like in a discussion/disagreement at work? |

You've never said that in conversation - ever? Like in a discussion/disagreement at work? In my opinion is entirely different. That one actually makes sense and is polite. Instead of saying, "that figure sucks", as if it's objectively so, you add the subjective IMO. Adding, I'm sorry implies even more strongly that your opinion is objectively correct. And yes Vulcan, you need to change your name back. Or at least the avatar, that dude's creeping me out. But at least it's not a monkey pissing into its own mouth. (no offense DM) |

The jist of it was "I now understand your point, Roshan." Last edited by Cobra Terrorist; 11-22-2011 at 03:00 PM.. |
