Gonna go out on a limb here
I am more curious as to why you are sharing this information on a public messageboard. Seems like a VERY bad idea to me |

Thats some scary shit. But I think you handled it quite well. I'm going to say that in the back of your head you were thinking about the children and the wife. Thats what kept you from shooting. The guy is probably going through some crap right now and wanted an easy way out. Suicide by Cop seems to be on the rise these days and its sad. When I was younger I was always in trouble with the PD and my brother was a county sheriffs deputy for 11 years. When I got my head out of my butt I wanted to be a cop or a deputy. But the stories I heard from him changed my mind. I don't ever want to be in that position. You acted the was any intelligent human being would. Just because everyone says they would have shot him doesnt mean they would. Its easy to say but unless put in the same situation is hard to say. You did the right thing.

10 bucks says it all over the news where hes at. You can probably get on the website for the jail where hes at and shows all the booking activity and housed inmates. Its 2011. Its public.

I responded to a domestic call where the husband had choked his wife and left the home. I sent the other officer out to see if he could find the husband while I spoke to the wife and kids. While taking the report the husband drove in the driveway, jumping out of the car pointing a pistol at me. I took cover as best I could and stay between him and the family, drawing down on him and ordering him to drop the gun. He responding by screaming for me to shoot him, and at that point I had every right to do so, but something told me to wait and keep talking. I continued to tell him to drop the weapon, which he eventually did. Once I had him secure I recovered his gun, a black airsoft pistol with the orange tip removed.
I am very pleased with the way this incident turned out, but have been very confused by a lot of people since then, Everyone agrees that I handled it well, but a vast majority of the people who ask me about it start out with the question "Why didn't you shoot the bastard?" It really bothers me. This is not the first standoff I've ever been in, although I hope it was the last. Why is it that so many people seem to think that just because you can legally kill someone that its ok to do it? I could have shot him as soon as he arrived with no worse results than being given a few days off, but I'd have to live with knowing it was a toy. I have no idea what stopped me from shooting. Hindsight shows all the clues, he was begging me to shoot him, he could have easily shot me but didn't. When I first saw the gun I was convinced I was about to die. Was it training, experience, or some heavenly force that stopped me long enough to resolve this relatively peacefully? I simply don't know, but I'm glad I don't have to live with the screams of this mans children after killing their daddy in front of them over a toy gun. Quote:
Did you stop to think about your family? if you have one.
You could have easily become a fatality. I respect what you did but you can always shoot the individual to wound him and disable him. You don't have to shoot to kill, if you feel that strongly about it. But if that is your mentality, it may catch up to you. I just watched a video of two cops beating the crap out of an attempted car thief, then chest bumping. Its nice two here a good cop story every now and again. |

Everything is public knowledge. And yes, it is in the news.

But clearly there is a pending criminal case against this individual
I don't know I just don't think I would be going public with a story like this and talking about in the manner in which you are. May come back to bite you later on. |

Thanks for sharing this. I would say that every situation is different. You made the right decision and it turned out fine in the end. I wouldn't second guess it at all. I do know that my department has a debriefing when this stuff happens and maybe you need this type of thing to clear out the scenario from your head. You simply made a judgement call based on the situation that you were in and that is it. I would just talk to the people you work with in the future instead of coming to the Hisstank. Maybe even talk with the people that you know are in law enforcement on the forums instead. So you don't get assclowns handing you advise you don't need. This kind of stuff gets posted all the time in "law enforcement" forums. I don't think it is any different than someone posting that they went in a burned home to get an old flagg or posting that they are working on Thanksgiving. It just so happens that it got posted on a action figure site. Last edited by nerdsgetchicks; 11-19-2011 at 12:30 AM.. |

It seems like a legitimate topic compared to most of our useless threads that get started.

I certainly commend you for taking the action (or inaction perhaps) and preventing a more serious tragedy from occuring. I am just curious if there could be more legal ramifications about discussing it in this manner. |
