I had read this article Holiday store hours anger employees customers- MSN Money and got to thinking...
I work for Best Buy, though I work for Geek Squad Home Theater Installs, I don't work Thanksgiving and Black Friday, but my fellow co-workers within the stores do. I feel what Anthony Hardwick is trying to accomplish. It sucks that many in the retail business can't spend a full Holiday with their families just because they're all competing for consumers money. What are you thoughts on this subject. How many of you work retail and have to deal with not spending time with your families because you have to work that evening?

Honestly, I could never do it.
I'm so tight with my family it's ridiculous. Holidays are off the hook, there is no way no how I wouldnt be with my family or around to help out with all the cooking and everything else. I gotta think though that people who go into retail, or any kind of emergency services understand that their hrs arent really "normal" when it comes to holidays and stuff. I remember when I was like 18 I worked at Bradlees for like a month right before the whole chain disapeared. I unloaded trucks in the morning. The manager came in and said "Anyone not here on July 4th and anyone who asks for off from this point on is fired." I just went into his office and said "I have plans for the weekend, should I just leave?" He didn't look up, just said "bye." So I took the POTF Tie Fighter Pilot under my shirt and left |

It's the nature of the beast. I guess if it's good enough for the Dallas cowboys and the Detroit Lions it's good enough for the rest of us.

Holidays aren't Holidays anymore when working in retail.
Since Toysrus has decided to open Thanksgiving night the past 2 years, I'm stuck working Thanksgiving night. Last year I worked til 3am Thanksgiving morning setting up for black Friday. After sleeping in a little bit I had thanksgiving dinner, then dessert and was off to work at 9pm (We opened at 10 last year). Now that we open at 9 this year, I'm working 8pm-8am. The closing time the past few years for Christmas eve has been awful as well. Two years ago I didn't get home til' after 11pm on Christmas Eve, this past year it was 10pm. That's retail for you. |

With the job market being what it is - I think people should shut up and work when it's available.

I look at it like this:
1: If youre in that line of business, expect it. And on top of that, be thankful that enough people spend their hard earned money patronizing your place of employment so you can STAY employed. 2: Similar to number 1, be THANKFUL that you HAVE a job! MILLIONS of Americans DONT! Sorry you have to work on a "holiday". Maybe you could have a big turkey dinner on your next day off and realize that you probably dont celebrate Thanksgiving for the right reasons anyway, and moving your dinner to another day isnt that big of a deal. Ive been there and done that, and thats how I always looked at it. My wife grew up with her mother always working on Thanksgiving and Christmas (the Christmas thing would piss me off, but.....), so they just moved them to another day. Its not that big of a deal really, especially if youre celebrating for the right reasons. |
