According to ESPN, Joe Paterno has been fired as Penn State football's head coach. This comes after an investigation into one of his former assistant's sexual misconduct with students. Penn State's president has also been asked to step down and has resigned, effective immediatley.

Good!
Was I the only one who thought it was completely insane to let him coach the Senior Day game this Sat?? Ok I understand we don't have a full story on what Paterno's role was in this whole thing but let's use logic here. That man is Penn State football. You mean to tell me that a guy who has been in that locker room for over 4 decades, coaches with a guy in the same locker room that has 40 counts of sexual misconduct and doesnt know anything?? Nothing?! I'm sorry that doesn't cut it. Also as far as McQuery is concerned....so you left the locker room after seeing the attrocity that you saw and called your dad.......but didn't take the kid with you? Dude, grab the kid, make some noise, pull a fire alarm ANYTHING!! BUT GET THE KID AWAY FROM THE 60 YEAR OLD MAN WHOSE GETTING OUT OF THE SHOWER WITH HIM! This whole thing sucks, shame on everyone who didn't do enough or nothing at all. You're just as bad as the sick scumbag who would do such a thing. I listined to ESPN all day today and if you heard the guy who called Colin Cowherd today who is now 47 and was a victim as a kid.....it was enough to choke me up. |

Well from the reports I heard, Paterno followed Penn State protocol when he learned what had happened. But as a cop on ESPN said, he fulfilled his legal obligation but not his moral obligation. The way I understand it is the school knew about it and tried to cover it up. Paterno notified the school and that was it. When he knew the school failed to act, he should have notified the property authorities.

Thats exactly why I'm pissed and dissapointed in Paterno.
This is a guy you want to like and respect. I understand he followed protocol....but with something like this, being that you are a deity at a place of higher education I think you have to use your moral judgement and say "Hey, this isn't right. I gotta act." Even if it meant Joe getting a new coaching staff just to ensure it didn't happen again. He did what I think is the bare minimum and for anyone, especially a man of his stature, in this situation it's just not enough. |

Oh man, this is getting ugly.
I wish I knew more details about exactly what was said to each person in the chain, especially Paterno. I still have a hard time believing that people were told "Hey, I saw him raping a 10-yr. old in the shower" and no one did anything more than pass on the message. EDIT: The guy who actually saw this and didn't do anything? He should friggin' hang himself for being such a piece of shit. Last edited by Cobra Terrorist; 11-09-2011 at 11:55 PM.. |

I listined to ESPN all day today and if you heard the guy who called Colin Cowherd today who is now 47 and was a victim as a kid.....it was enough to choke me up. Listening to ESPN was like listening to a lynch mob today. They weren't reporting so much as badgering guests or only bringing on guests who would say Paterno should be out. Terrible bully pulpit. It was a shit situation. They all probably should have been fired who any contact with the situation. But if everyone who was close to the guy said they had no clue, and this guy's your friend and somebody you don't know really well comes and gives you a vague story of wrongdoing, I don't know how serious I would take it beyond reporting it and having a private conversation with my friend. But I don't know if it was vague or not, and neither does f'ing ESPN who kept filling in the gaps that haven't been covered yet. They've been running 'get rid of JoPa' segments for the past 10 years and it was getting old before this even came up. and I hate college football and could give a crap about Penn State. This is a goddamned child rape case and they're focusing on the fringes like vultures instead of the guy who should be getting his balls ripped off in prison. And PV, you and I are not most people. I believe that most people in that situation would not stop it. Most people would not go into the shower and bash that guy's head into the tile floor like we would. I don't buy all of this outrage because I think the majority of people in that position would have slunk away and told, like he did. Most would probably scream louder than that guy did though once they got out of the room. |

He did what I think is the bare minimum and for anyone, especially a man of his stature, in this situation it's just not enough. Do you know if he had a personal conversation with Sandusky? Has that been put on the record yet? Cause like I said before. If you had a colleague you've worked with for decades tell you the guy completely misunderstood the situation, and that guy had years of being a community leader under his belt, would you give him the benefit of the doubt or ruin his career because of what a GA said, and again how vaguely he said it. But let's just set fire to the hole place before we get to the bottom of anything Mike McQueary, the then-graduate assistant and current wide receivers coach who testified he saw Jerry Sandusky raping a boy in the shower, has had "no change" in his job status, Surma said. Paterno also was told of the board's decision over the phone. Just saw this. So where's the consistency? He told his superior as well and then didn't go anywhere else with it. Why does he still have a job? Last edited by Roshan; 11-09-2011 at 11:59 PM.. |

I'm a Penn State graduate (Mgmt 2004).
Everyone's got an opinion, and what's funny to me is that half the people who feel the need to spew forth their take on this situation are the same people that I wouldn't trust to tell me what the weather is outside. It's great that we focus on Joe Paterno for 23 hours of the day and that Sandusky's involvment is quickly becoming a page two article. |

Man gives you 50 years and several millions of dollar in donation and you fire him over the phone and then pull that primadonna press conference. That is disgraceful.

this whole situation is just fucked up beyond comprehension. what has to happen before you call the cops or fire someone? if he was chopping some one's head off in the shower, would that have been enough to warrant a phone call to the cops?
