Two days ago, I was at a Lady's house, and I ended up saying the word can't in a sentence.
She paused, and asked if I said can or can't - she's always had a hard time understanding Americans saying those words. I said can not - just to make clear what I said earlier. She went on to explain how the English pronounce the two words. And I just wouldn't be comfortable saying the word can't as the English do, with my fast-paced southern accent, especially in front of a lady. So I chuckled, and told her no way could say it like that. (I'd end up saying the queen mother of bad words in referring to a female).

Oh, man...
At first i thought that said "Lody's house"... The English that The English use is almost incomprehensible to me... So i can see their problems with our version!

When I hear people from England speak it's hard to believe we speak the same language. Seriously we've butchered the hell out of the English language. Or maybe made it better depending on how you look at things. Fo shizzle.

Ive watched british television most of my life so its nothing to me. I actually use a lot of english jargon and ppl look at me funny. Which is ironic because my gfs parents are british and they have a cpl english friends so Im around it all the time now. I have no problem understanding them and we joke about the differences, and they think its funny I drop their lingo into conversation.

Or, you could just consider that you aren't in an Alabama drug store and pronounce it the way they do in England. England being their own country and a place where the skiddishness of such a pronunciation shouldn't matter at all. Besides, who gives a shit about language unless they're more-absorbed by the reaction of those around them who are more familiar? When you get back to the States, then you can start to stop thinking about the Vagina as though it were monolithic. But for now, you're a guest in someone else's house. |
