My wife and I were having a discussion as to how to define butt rock, and after reading some of the entries on urban dictionary, it really isn't any clearer. I think one of the driving forces behind butt rock is that it leans heavily on irony - which, intentional or not, probably makes it all the more difficult to define.
Musically, the genre doesn't offer anything new. It seems to fall somewhere in between glam, power and hair metal, but can also encompass other elements such as grunge or alternative rock. My wife says that Foreigner is the ultimate butt rock band, but I tend to think that there is no band that wholely belongs in this category. It's more of a sub-classification, and while individual songs could be categorized as butt rock (Bad Company's "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love", Foreigner's "Hot Blooded"), it's harder to find bands that exclusively write butt rock. I think the closest definition I can find is that butt rock "songs consist of the same over-used series of power chords and corny lyrics and may often contain the use of keyboards or (Lord help us) a keytar, but are just following what hard rock and metal bands have done from 1970's-1985." Further, it "is often severely lacking in originality but ends up being largely popular because idiots tend to be mesmerized by it. An easy way to identify whether or not music is butt rock is to play it in a room full of white trash on methamphetamines. If they start head-banging, then you've got yourself some butt rock." But this definition is probably the most accurate: "A genre of rock music that has had different meanings over time, but which generally describes bands who meet the following criteria: 1. The music is driven primarily by power chords, and focuses less on complexity and musical talent and more on radio-friendliness and the emotional impact it has on listeners. As such, butt rock has never been a hit with critics, but it has always enjoyed mainstream popularity. 2. The songs fit into one of two molds -- hard-rocking tracks designed to get the crowd pumped and "rocking out," or slower power ballads that are meant to attract female fans. Both types of songs are best played in an arena, which is why they are popular at pro wrestling events. 3. The subject matter of the lyrics tends to be about kicking ass, getting laid, auto racing, hedonism, and other "manly" subjects. Rebellion is also a common theme, with authority figures like cops, teachers, and parents all being portrayed as not understanding their needs. The exception is the aforementioned power ballads, which are often about loss, love, drug abuse, and other, "heavier" subjects. The lyrics in both types of songs are often misogynistic, with women portrayed as either sex objects, harpies, or home-wreckers. 4. The fanbase tends to be frat boys and working-class men between the ages of 16 and 40." So what do you categorize as butt rock?

I had no idea this term existed nor do I understand why it needed to be identified. Judging from the definition provided it doesn't seem like a real category of rock, rather, just something someone made up to be able to use the term "butt rock" because they find it amusing. Further, how did the word "butt" come into play regarding the context of the songs it is supposed to represent. I don't see the connection.

I think it has to do with moving your hips and raising your hands in the air..not really dancing, not moshing, not head-banging..just hip or butt moving.
Like the Elaine dance with less leg. The kind of dance you could do with a hot dog in one hand and a beer in the other.
