Netflix officially separates DVD, streaming pricing; $15.98 and up for both -- Engadget
Way to go, jacking the base rate up by 50%. What a crock of shit!

Red Box has already been stealing some business away from Netflix from me, but to be honest, as a 5 year PLUS member of Netflix, ALWAYS having AT LEAST the 3 at a time plan, Ill be canceling. When they raised the price of Blu-Ray I dropped it but when they raised the price of my 3 at a time to $20 I kept it, figuring it was still a decent deal. Well, not anymore. Redbox will get more of my business. Dont these companies understand that people arent willing to pay a ton to rent movies? Seriously, we can download them (yes, illegally, but still) for free, or just straight up buy them for fairly cheap compared to their rental fees. Im sick of feeling like Im getting hosed, so Netflix will lose my business until they change something.
And you know, what would they do if everyone, EVERY SINGLE MEMBER, canceled their membership tomorrow? Theyd shit a brick, thats what. Too bad Americans cant unite and prove a point to these big companies (like big oil). Can you imagine if no car owner in the US bought gas for a couple days in a row!? Come on people, its movies rentals, cancel and tell your friends to cancel. Screw them. |

Recently, Netflix removed a lot of streaming movies b/c their contract with Sony & Starz was up for renegotiation. The contract was originally $30 million per year. It's been reported that Starz now wants $350 million per year.
While I am not trying to defend Netflix's rate hikes, I do see where they are coming from. However, I do believe the price increases with hurt Netflix in the near future. It's great to rent movies for $1 from Redbox. Unfortunately, they do not carry the supply of older and international movies available on Netflix.

It's just capitalism.
Drive your enemies out of business then raise your prices. I'm OK, though. There's like maybe 3 movies I want to see a year. I've sort of allowed myself to be left behind by the every-5-years-or-so changes in media technology retail. I've become like Pam Grier in "Jackie Brown." I don't get new stuff that often. plays Didn't I Blow Your Mind
