Well, lets be fair for a minute: Ive been in band & garage bands since I was 8. I had my first guitar when I was 4 and my first drum kit at 7. We can say that about MOST "musicians" really, whether its bass, drums, guitar, singing, etc. There are lots of guys who can play, but there really are very few TRUE musicians/artists.

To be fair Jamerson influenced almost every player of pop and rock that you hear today wether directly or indirectly. When I say rock, I mean real rock, not metal that people try to pass off as rock. Shifty Henry was a pioneer of the electric bass.
If you're talking about competent bassists who really aren't "artists" then you'd be referring to guys like Bill Black, Elvis' original bassist who while a solid bassist and great band leader wasn't innovative in the least outside of his help in building Elvis' early sound. That sound was just a mish mash between country and blues for the most part. In most rock and pop music the bassist plays a support role 90% of the time anyhow. That's their job. Sure there are guys like Harris who manage to be amazing, AND still fill that role. However, most of the "big name" artists who are bassists aren't really the most solid bassists. Look at Flea. People worship him as a bassist. However, in a traditional bassists role he's awful. I caught an RHCP performance of The Ramones classic "I Wanna Be Sedated". It dragged and was completely without drive or life. That is Flea's fault. In a punk band, a real punk band, the bass and the drums drive the music with their push and pull. Something Flea has no real skill at because he usually makes everyone play around what he does. Not saying that he isn't talented, he's extremely gifted and skilled. Just saying that what makes a great bassist would depend on what the band they are in needs. With the exception of guys like Flea, most bassists rarely ever play to the fullest extent of their musical ability all the time. That would make the lead guitar players cry like little girls. ;)

Matt Freeman sounds good on the wax but I saw Rancid several times in the 90s and he couldn't really pull off the fast solos live. I'm not saying he's no good, just not the best of all time.

Which brings up a whole different issue. It's a shame that he feels the need to do that. He is a good bassist, unfortunately somewhere there was a disconnect from the original punk music to what came after where it was okay to "fake it". Dee Dee Ramone was no virtuoso, but he never faked it a day. It really all depends on how you want to put yourself out there. Some guys view the studio as almost like a lab where they try to create the perfect parts, using multiple tracks and mashing them together to get that "perfect" sound. Others just play what works best for the band, and what they can do, and do well. Both are perfectly valid approaches. Growing up on the music I did, I always prided myself on what you heard on the album was what you would get live. I'd never want to be in a position of falsely advertising my band or abilities as one thing, and when someone pays good money to see a show, they are disappointed. If you're going to pay me to play, I feel it's only right I deliver. However, that's just a personal thing.
