ok, so far i have seen transformers, and i don't like the syle.
i have now seen the look of the new "bold and beautiful" batman or what ever the hell it is.. i really dont like it. i have also seen the new spider man toys.... and can't really say i am feeling those to much other than venom... my questions are 1. what the hell is it with this weirdo style now? are these people on LSD? 2. who decided everything should be re-hashed and done this way? 3. why is everything being "dumbed-down" for pre-schoolers? 4. who the hell is buying this crap when it comes out? 5. if g.i. joe is done in the to me what seems "corny" oddball look will you watch it? or buy the toys? 6. what else can they re-hash and make all weirdo looking? so far they got joe, transformers, and now batman, spiderman I may be getting old.... but I LONG for some quality cartoOns with a story and some decent dialogue and good writing my favorite "cartoons/series" would have to be... bill bixby- incredible hulk (not a cartoon) but since the movie is out and i haven't seen it i thought i would throw it in.. also i like the fact they are tying stuff in across the bOard. batman the animated series (the original) (loved it!) justice league/JLU- love it to.. masters of the universe (200x) loved it!! thundercats (liked alot of them some were campy) silverhawks (same as above) transformers (most werE awesome) g i joe ( same as above) (fox) spiderman (great stuff till about the last year or so) lol fox (x-men) good episodes.. to bad no dvds :( i guess all the good ideas and the time of quality has since passed... maybe in 10 years somewhere someone will look and see that this is how thingS should be done.. but for the next 10... it looks like were in for a different experience |

They are selling these things to 5 year olds, so no sharp edges. I've wondered the same thing myself about the animation. I can barely stand the Bat Man Beyond animation. It took a while to get used to Teen Titans, but I don't know what I would do if I didn't get to watch an hour of Spiderman on Sat mornings.

While I have to confess that there were many flaws with 80's cartoons, they did at least have narrative structure with a definate plot developing through a begining, middle and end.
Nowadays, cartoons seem to consist of brief opening, extended fight scenes and characters shouting at each other while nothing of consequence seems to happen. People don't really look like people anymore either. And no, it isn't 'rose tinted spectacle' syndrome, as I have shows from many eras available to me right now.

The problem we're facing is that cartoons now are actually being targeted at the youngans (5 yr olds and such) where in the 80's the popular belief was that we can target the kids (Probably closer to 8-10 yr olds) but we don't have to dumb down the story. Mind you they did do this with some toons though. I've heard rants about how dumbed down Thundercats was (something along the lines of they have the characters explain what they're doing all the time when no one has asked them what they're doing IE: "I'm walking up the stairs! We're walking to the woods to find berries.") And don't even get me started on "Turbo Teen" (The cartoon where a kid turned into a car whenever he got hit with hot water)
I'm ok with the new Spider-man series but I also notice the story is taking a lot from the 90's toon. I'll have moments when I'm like "I've seen this whole scene, but with different pictures before" I do wish that there were more good cartoons on. Everytime I turn on the CW on Saturday mornings or turn on Cartoon Network all I see is the same style ("Goofy Style") cartoons with, what seem like, insipid storylines (I haven't really sat through any for a whole show) At least cartoons aren't all "Anime" now (course some of those from the 90's actually had a real story behind them) |

I agree completely. The new cartoons are the worst! And Cartoon Network needs to be put out of it's misery.
BUT, if you go take a look at the Transformers boards you'll find that majority there love Transformers:Animated to death. They can't get enough of it. And I'm sure the Joe fans would be the same exact way. Hate it before it's released but worship it after it has been released. |
