Last night, tornados ripped through areas of Kansas and Iowa.
I have a lot of family in the areas hit in Kansas (Manhattan and Chapman, Chapman being hit VERY hard) who have been giving us reports of the areas. I hear its real bad in Chapman, a friend of the family lost an arm, and there was one reported death of a 21 year old girl found in a yard. KSU was also hit, as well as a car dealership and several on campus buildings. In Sioux City Iowa (I think it was), a youth camp was hit, killing 4 people. I dont have as much info on that, but there is news coverage all over the internet. All of my family is okay, but I would appreciate any thoughts and prayers to those not as fortunate.

i hear you man, they came outta nowhere. my parents were very close to the storm, one touched down right outside my home town, 12-18 blocks away! my mom and step father and my dad and step mom rode out the storm under their stairs in the basement. they had to sit there for an hour and a half!! my girlfriends brother in law had his elementry school destroyed in manhatten, what we all dreamed about when we were young.
i have been through chapmen many times, i can't imagine it now. i wish your friends and family the best, as i sit here now under a tornado watch here in kc. |

I live here in Manhattan and I ventured out during lunch today (hard to even want to be at work) and Manhattan is in pretty bad shape. The parts I saw were bad enough but the REAL bad areas were closed off.
I know alot of people have been worried about Kstate campus but KSU can afford this hit. It's the people on the west side I feel the worst for. Houses just ripped apart. It's just really sad. Hey A.V.A.C good luck with the weather tonight. Hopefully it will diminish as it gets closer to KC. |

As a Unit Commissioner with my local BSA....and having a 15 year old Scout in the program (since Tiger Cubs).....we watched this and have been in contact with other Scouts that we know......
The tragedy is unfathomable....the fact that these boys reacted the way that they did.......this is the good and bad of disaster. The worldwide community of Boy Scouts feels the pain and sorrow......we are a family....and as a family, we will overcome..... R.I.P. to the boys who have left us far too soon...... Josh Fennen, 13, Sam Thomsen, 13, and Ben Petrzilka, 14, all of Omaha, Nebraska; and Aaron Eilerts, 14, of Eagle Grove, Iowa On our honor....we will remember you............

A.V.A.C. be safe man! We'll be thinking of ya bro!
R.I.P. Josh Fennen, 13, Sam Thomsen, 13, and Ben Petrzilka, 14, all of Omaha, Nebraska; and Aaron Eilerts, 14, of Eagle Grove, Iowa and my condolences to the families of all the victims of this horrible tragedy. On a personal side, all of my family has now been accounted for, my cousin in Manhattan and a friend of mine who has a GF that goes to KSU have been texting me updates all day. Yeah, I hear its pretty bad. I saw some overhead shots of Chapman, my god, to think Ive been visiting there as long as Ive been alive (29 years), and knowing now that it will never be the same, truely surreal, its Greensburg all over again. again, best of luck AVAC

thanks for thoughts reznor, we dodged another bullet. i can't believe the amount of tornado's we're getting here, it's off the charts. i actually started to get my emergency kit together when the sirens went off. night tornado's suck even worse, cuz you can't see the bastards coming at ya.
i only remember chapman as a speedtrap town as a teenager growing up in salina. however, i hope they can rebuild and move on. i am glad your family is ok reznor. i just thought i would post a pic of the path the vector took. my mom's home, were my joes once dwelled, is near the center by the green square. the "red balloons" are where the tornado's touched down. |

A tornado touched down here south of the military base near Derby. Spent some time in the basement tonight. Good times.

man, crazy crazy! Glad to hear your all alright!
Yeah, Im not originally from Kansas, but I consider it my "other home state". Like 90% of my family live in, or was from Kansas, all in the areas that got hit too. It was like 11:30pm and my Aunt called my dad freaking the hell out about her house taking a minor hit, we didn't even have a clue that weather was getting bad for yall. We have family in the Salina, Abiline, Enterprise, Chapman, and Navaar and Manhattan areas, and we got to looking on the internet (because we couldn't get ahold of anyone else) for any information, and heres these reports of tornados hitting most of those areas. Talk about heart stopping...geez. My cousin was in Manhattan and we were texting eachother all night, and I guess he was pretty close to one of the dealerships that got nailed, but his place didn't take much if any damage. Again, best wishes and prayers to all of those effected by this horrible event. I gotta say too, its awful humbling, reading and watching the news of these kinds of things, and you feel bad, but you have a "wish I could do something, but cant" kinda feeling, but when it hits your family, wow, talk about gut wrenching. Sounds like my parents are heading up pretty soon to see what they can do, and we may take in some of relatives in if they need it, but all in all, other than some scrapes, bruises, and knicked houses, they are all good.
